I've heard that Newcastle are willing to allow Alan Smith to leave on a free transfer. Would you like him in our team?

We know his temperament is suspect (Leggy did him back in that FA Cup game), but we know he plays for the team (and took one for the Newcastle team when they played down here the season before last).

As a snappy midfielder I think he'd be a good addition, but I suspect his wage demands would be too high.

Can't imagine for one minute he would want to come to us, we are not his favourite people.
But should he feel he would want to play for us, then absolutely.

Fairy snuff H bomb - Horses for courses and all that.

Perhaps he could be persuaded to join us, but I agree that Leeds would remain favourites to get him should he decide to leave the Geordies.

He's always come across as a very passionate English player, so coming to Wales might never be an option for him.

Alan Smith would probably be usefull to a team like Crystal Palace who are going to struggle to stay up next season
If you want promotion you need better than someone who is well passed their best
I think promotion will be harder next season with the teams promoted and relegated from the premier and league one

I'm not convinced he's past his best, he's only 30.

I think he'd do a job for us, we need someone who can win the ball, and who's not afraid to show a bit of desire and get stuck in, something sadly lacking from the Cardiff team last season.

However as said, if Leeds are interested then I guess as a local Yorkshire lad I doubt any other Championship team would get a look-in.

Not sure about Smithy TBH he is the TYPE of player we could do with, but with his dodgy temperament, I don't think he would be that valuable an addition, he's bound to be looking to pick up big money, and there are probably better, cheaper options out there <ok>

Fair comment Prophet. He's definitely the TYPE we need. If not Smith being as he's going to Forest, who else in his mould do you suggest we should be looking at?

His ex-colleague Bowyer may also be available from Brum lol.

Sorry H - I did know that lol. I bet he'll be off to Leeds tho.

Gerrard might be suited to it R54_DJ, but he might need to work on his distribution somewhat, although for all I know that could have improved at Hull.

Mmmmm - Darcy? You might have a point!

Daz, Leeds would be the favs I'd imagine. I just read they might be in for Woodgate and Bowyer too. If Kasper Schmeichel does head to the Foxes, I can see Nigel Martyn getting a phone call soon <laugh>

We were linked with him on loan from Man Utd back in 2006, with Fergie commenting that we were interested:
"On 10 November 2006, Leeds United boss Dennis Wise revealed he was interested in bringing Smith back to Elland Road on loan.[8] Ferguson told the press that Cardiff City were also interested and he would let Smith go out on a short-term loan for Smith to regain his fitness."

But he wasn't interested and went nowhere...
I don't think we should be risking an injury-prone player at his age, let Leeds have him return home, I'll hold out for our injury-prone older player to return home once more from Man City thanks!
