Forte didn't really do much, did he? Just happened to be in the right place twice when the ball fell to him. The second in particular was very fortunate.
SKD has made quite a habit of being beaten at his near post over the years. I don't think it is entirely his fault. If there is such as thing as a striker's coaching manual I'm certain that it will say that one never shoots at the near post because the keeper has that one covered. Problem is, SKD believes it too, but modern strikers don't seem to have read the manual. I know I had it drummed into me at school level that one always went for the far post. I didn't listen all the time either.
Who is the Co-Commentator for this one? He is not blessed with the most charismatic voice Makes you yearn for whispering Dave Merrington
Oh, that's harsh. You could say the same of Gary Lineker and Michael Owen. Both goal poachers who had an instinct to be in the right place at the right time. All goal scorers have it, even those at lower league levels.
Three years later and I still punched the air watching Barnard put in the 3rd...great game, great kit, great team. EDIT: forgot to mention the goosebumps
Ah..! Well done Godders. When I saw the post which asked who the co-commentator was, I thought.., anybody knows who that co-commentator is... And then I couldn't think of him for the life of me. In my mind's eye I could see him, but I couldn't put a name to the face. Ta.
Barny's goal was well taken, always felt it was a shame he didn't make the step up. Thought he was going to be useful at championship level. Is he still on the books?
Correct, and the Southend fans have very little appetite or desire to sign him. He's been really poor, apparently.
Barnard was unlucky. He was very good in league 1, but injury caused him to miss the start of the championship season. Connolly, Lambert + Guly remained above him in the pecking order when he returned, one of my favourites in league one.
Just had a look on Wikipedia to ses the odd bit of info and stat, and Barnard played 62 league games for Saints, scoring 23 goals. SIXTY-TWO times..! That doesn't account for the various cup matches. I'm slightly staggered. It proves to me that those two seasons spent in League One are fast becoming a dream. And I'm slightly disappointed about that because I really loved those two seasons. I don't want us to go back there again but I certainly loved it while we were there. One day I'll be able to explain to myself why I enjoyed it so, but until then I at least want to remember it. Think I'll give over a few hours and look back through the Saints archive, at some point.
I don't think we would have gotten out of League One were it not for those Forte goals against MK Dons, so his contract has been worth it many, many times over. I really don't get the constant cries for Saints to waste their time trying to offload financially inconsequential players. Does it really offend you that much that Forte is on Saints' books even though he hasn't played for Saints in years? We've had much bigger things to concern ourselves with during transfer windows than trying to offload Forte.
It actually doesn't bother me in the slightest. It is merely a curiosity. As with all of the players who contributed to Saints rapid rise to the present day, I thank them all, and [hopefully, though I can't guarantee it, it seems - see post #35 above] won't forget them, no matter how small their contribution was. They were there.
Forte doesn't have that, that's an insult on those other two. Linekar would make run after run within the box, hoping for the ball to be where he ran and inevitably sometimes it would be. It was not about him being in the right place at the right time, but continually making the right runs all game for nothing, 95% of the time, for the one or two times the right ball was delivered into the area he had run. So many people said he was just in the right place at the right time, which in footballing terms is uneducated. Massive insult to that "skill" they had. #strikersunion
Thanks, No doubt he was wearing his shorts whilst commentating. Remember those half times at the Dell
