Virtually everyone polled will not have the nous to able to fully evaluate what it would mean to join Hull. Managing a city of Hull with its widespread deprivation must be a tough job; compare this to managing ER. Paranaby said on Look North about Hull’s services, museums et al being used by ER residents. Essentially he was suggesting that Hull should make these pay for themselves – i.e. charge their residents/patrons for use. Which is fine if you’re earning a decent wage but a lot of Hull isn’t – maybe Hull should charge ER patrons only then? People don’t want to research and make a reasoned decision, so it’ll come down to past misconceptions and prejudices of Hull and HCC. People want tabloid quick fixes and mud sticks from previous mistakes – so of course it’ll be a no vote.
Bang on. But through prejudice and sheer ignorance/stupidity people can't make this distinction. HCC are bad cos the councillors don't pronounce their aitches.
A lot can change in ten years but headlines like these take a while to live down. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/humber/4099063.stm Why would anyone voluntarily seek to be under a council that has a history of underperformance?
I agree - people will remember damning verdicts like that. If it did happen (which it won't) it'd be very interesting to see what happened to the make up of the council, it's services and cabinet.
i think its a reasonable argument that residents of East Riding who work and travel to Hull dont contribute in the same way as Hull residents Also it will Average up Hull on just about every other leaderboard and become a much fairer comparison to other cities which tend to incorporate surrounding villages into their statistics . Not sure what the Yes campaign is offering to those outside of Hull , but they should be able to show beifits to them for it to work - its no good just saying its whats fair . As im sure there are a lot more people on Tax Benefits in Hull than elsewhere to counter the argument .
Let's merge - and then the East Riding schools can have the millions spent on them that the Hull schools have.
Most of the Hull schools that have had millions spent on them are in the top 10% most deprived areas in the country. You think it’s unfair that Hull schools came first? It was the coalition who stopped BSF by the way.
I think money should have been spent on schools in both Hull and the East Riding. That was the original deal to try and stop the migration of students from Hull to the East Riding.
I'm not sure that's right or even works, but ER schools aren't necessarily better than Hull's. From experience of both from various angles, I wouldn't have gone out of my way to get the kids into an ER school, now with the Academies, the Hull ones are far and above the better option. Didn't ERYC get caught fudging the school figures? They also rely on Hull for special needs and problem kids.
Sirius is in the top 50 academies in the country. That said there are some really poor schools in Hull, as there are in the East Riding. Hunsley still has a very good rep. That's right I said rep. Brap brap.
The general and most important aim of BSF in Hull was to ‘transform learning, skills and opportunities for children’ in what at the time was the 9th most deprived LA in the country. I live in the ER but I’m really pleased Hull’s kids are being taught in these, in the main, superb facilities. As far as I’m aware, ER applied later to BSF in 2008 – not sure of the reason why, perhaps this ER dropping the ball or was for another reason. As said, the coalition scrapped BSF in 2010. However, I think plans are afoot through a different enterprise to revamp ER schools. To what extent and which ones, I don’t know as I haven’t checked it out.
Gotta love Parno. If Parno went to Middlesbrough would he eat a Parmo? What if he was watching Italian football and Parma were playing? Parno with a parmo watching Parma. I think I've drank too much.
I think it is all part of the wider problem (the ignorance/superficiality factor). Politicians often talk of ‘not being able to fool the great British public’. If only that was true.
I work with a lot of people who work, shop, and socialise in Hull but live in the East Riding. I can guarantee most of these would vote no and mostly for the snobbery factor. Funnily enough the worst of these all came from Bransholme, Ings or OPE estates.
