I am going to check out flight options for the play-off final date of May 24th and will take my chances and book if I get a good deal. What airports are realistic options with regards access? Advice appreciated.
Heathrow obviously easiest, then probably Luton, Gatwick, and Stansted and Birmingham at a push. All but the first will require getting trains into London then tube out to Wembley, will add time and cost. Heathrow you can get there on the tube, with one change of lines.
Heathrow is by far the closest and easiest...it is then a tube in to Oxford Circus, then out to Wembley Central. Other options are Stansted but it is a longer train into London, then the tube across to Wembley...or similar to Stansted from Gatwick.
Isn't that mainly used for smaller private planes? Heathrow isn't bad, it took me about 25 mins to get to LR from there so should not be more than45 mins to Wembley. That's about the same time for me to get from Waterloo to LR.
Plenty of short haul flights there, just uses smaller planes like those mini jumbo four engined ones. Only flown on those once and it wasn't great, very wobbly compared to a normal sized plane when with the flaps down on landing approach.
I've never flown internally so wouldn't know about that but do they even have flights from Ireland? I've gone to Ireland about 5 times and LCA wasn't even an option every time I looked.
Kerry when we went over for the Burnley game we flew into Gatwick and then train to Clapham Junction and Overground to Shepherds Bush, took a little over an hour ....now the Overground goes to Willesden Junction where you can change to the Bakerloo Line to Wembley Central (3 stops) and it is then a 10 minute walk to the stadium.....Might not be a bad alternative depending on flight times.
I wonder if TF has ever thought of taking over Northolt? Great access to both QPR and Wembley. He could run football specials from Malaysia.
Could extend them to Aus too... He replied to a tweet on another Aus QPR site saying that he would give us cheaper flights back if we make the final...
best heathrow then A10 bus to uxbridge stn. then met line to wembley park, 15/20 mins walk to stadium
I've used London City a few times. Good little airport and excellent links to Wembley Park, but Heathrow will probably be cheaper.
Yes, I will try and avoid flying in and out of City Airport again if at all possible. Went over to The Hague on a twin prop out of City Airport. Going out was not great as it was with the bumpy assent, but coming back the pilot come all the way up the Thames to Westminster, spun her around, came back over Canary Wharf and then nose dived down to the runway. My colleague was laughing his threepennys off at the sweat coming off me and I nearly needed assistance off the plane! I have not read to the end of the thread, so this may have been covered, but from Heathrow you can also get the Heathrow Express to Paddington, take the Tube a couple of stops to Marylebone and then take the Chiltern Line out of Marylebone which stop at Wembley Stadium and again only takes a few minutes as the stops are limited on that line in London. If you check the timings it can be a handy way and the Chiltern line has the benefits of you not having to commute with the usual riffraff you get on the Tube andyou can still use the Oyster/travelcard on that section of the line.
Given that the object of booking early is presumably to save money when flying from Ireland I would consider a Ryan Air flight to Luton. From there you can get the train to West Hampstead and change for the Jubilee Line up to Wembley. Should take you about an hour if you time things right.
Ryanair to Gatwick looks the cheapest. Trains into Clapham Junction are ok if booked online. I,ll be going that way for playoff home leg and hopefully final.
Gatwick -> Shepherds Bush can be reasonably done via Clapham Junction but for Gatwick -> Wembley the best route must surely be the Thameslink line to Farringdon and then straight on the Metropolitan line tube direct to Wembley. One convenient change and about 90 minutes door to door.
Most aircraft come in to LCY nose first, which can be a bit disconcerting, but it is a STOL port and you get used to it. Although, the first time I landed there, I shat my pants!
