What is the best football windup ever?

I think Operation Tango is up there with one of the best.

On the 24th May 2009 Rangers were away to Dundee United on the final day of the season. With only 2 points separating them with rivals Celtic, who were playing Hearts at Parkhead, Celtic had the upper hand in goal difference by only a single goal. If Rangers slipped up, Celtic could take the title, it was nerve wracking for both sets of fans.

Rangers from the start looked the dominant force and within 6 minutes took lead with a wonderful goal from Kyle Lafferty. As the news filtered back to Parkhead, the groans went out and then the crows went close to silent. Rangers were now 4 points ahead and level on goal difference. Celtic needed a comeback from Dundee United and then that might spur on the team to get the win against Hearts.

Unbeknownst to the Celtic support, Rangers fans on the fan forum site Follow Follow had already arranged to send text messages to friends of theirs that supported Celtic 15 minutes after the first goal went in. As the Celtic game approached the 22nd minute the texts starts to filter through.

A huge cheer went up as the Celtic support incorrectly believed that Dundee United had equalised. The bemused commentators spoke of how the Celtic fans had got it wrong and that it was still 1-0 to Rangers. The news spread like wildfire though, don on to the pitch were Paul Hartley was grinning at the news.

Then down on to the bench were the Celtic assistant manager could not contain his joy and leapt into the air. Then the reality kicked in.

    Rangers were still winning.

The confusion and groaning was quickly replaced yet again with a deadly silence.

Some have said that this was the greatest football prank ever, websites and news agencies around the world picked up on this story and applauded the light hearted banter dished out to rivals on the decisive final day of the season.

There's been a few between Celtic and Rangers over the years, with both sets coming up with crackers.

Being a Celtic fan, my 2 favourites are both from our fans.

The 1st being some Celtic fans got wind of a banner the Rangers fans were planning on unfurling at the next Old Firm game at Ibrox, regarding the controversy at the time about the "famine song". So in response they came up with their own, and unfurled it right beside the rangers one, just after they opened theirs up.

And the other one, was after we qualified for the Uefa Cup Final in Seville, we threw loads of beachballs, sombreros, lilos, blow up crocodiles for some reason too on to the pitch before the game.

The rangers staff and subs burst all the inflatables, which prompted loads of fans to call ibrox askin for their property back, knowing fine well they had all been destroyed.

Eventually they refused to answer any more calls regarding it, after hundreds of folk called up at the wind up.

One lad phoned up after even that and said:

Celtic fan: Hi can you put me through to lost property?
Rangers staff: If it's regarding your beach ball, we are advising that we cannot return the item...
C: No no, i lost my car keys at the game on saturday!
R: Oh ok. Well where were you?
    C: Celtic end
R: What make of car are they for?
    C: A Ford Mondeo.
R: Did they have any distinctive keyrings or attachments?
C: Well yeh actually, they were attached to a brightly coloured beachba...
    R: *Hangs up*
