Do any of the 'oldies' on this forum remember Corporation Fields? They were on Park street - on the left, approaching the railway bridge. They'd be about where the Tesco filling station is now. As a kid/youth I can remember them being the site of rows of lock-up storage buildings. They have an interesting history, having been at one time the site of Hull Fair, before its move to Walton street: http://www.carnegiehull.co.uk/the-anlaby-road/history/anlaby-road-history-06.html They were also the site of a pre-war battle between (communist) dockers, etc. and Mosley's Blackshirts: http://www.heretical.com/British/charnley.html And I found this blog, written about one Morris Miller, who fought at Corpo Fields and then in the Spanish Civil War, where he was killed: http://morrismiller.wordpress.com/ Anyon got any more info/links?
Wasnt there one Morris Miller who fought at Corpo Fields and was killed in the Spanish Civil War Stan if my memory hasnt failed me that is?
Think it was more of a big free for all with lots of stuff getting chucked about in an anarchic fashion. Time has retrospectively bestowed up it some more profound significance and organisation than there really was. Quite a few out of towners on both sides, with BUF having their wheels down Gt Thornton Street(?) if I remember correctly. Sort of City v Boro with tinges of Gordon Street Easter Friday '81.
I was there! My dad took me to see Oswald Mosleys lot he was speaking when a massive rough and Tumble started, my dad stayed but sent me home I only lived a 100 yards or so down Londesboro St. When he came home he said he thought it was a bit tame. I was born and bred down Londesboro treet and played all my football and cricket on that concrete surface. I always said I was conceived under Copo shed too. With regards to Hull fair being on there I don't think so, the cattle market and early morning fruit and veg mkt was held on there until ww2 started, there was permenent swings and roundabouts at the back wall. There was some business units too I remember Roaches fish and crab processing unit and Williamsons fruit and veg. I could go on but my fingers hurt. Ps Hull fair used to be somewhere in Drypool before it went to Walton street.
Fascinating stuff. Someone who was actually present at what has become a notorious event in our city's history. Did you watch City at Anlaby Rd?
Once, Dad took me there I can only remember the shirts they had. Both teams had stripes black and white and city's stripes when they were at the far end you couldn't tell the difference. ( It wouldn't be allowed today) I don't know who they were but I've thought about Grimsby since perhaps thats why we went. Dad Died just when the war ended so finding out when I became interested just wasn't on.
There can't be many people left alive who saw us play at Anlaby road. You would have to be at least 84 years old to have any recollection of it.
That can't be right, I played footy on the ground after the war in front of a dilapidated and decaying stand, we moved away from the area in 1946 so I don't know what happened then. My teacher was captain of Hull cricket club which was next door to the ground and I think that's how we came to play our footy. Don't expect me to remember everything unless you want my views on the war and what it was like in the shelters and being lucky enough to survive the bombing, only kidding.
My old man went on his old man's shoulders in the early 30s- remembers nowt. I'm not counting after 1939 as it was bombed/demolished even if local games were played there right up the 60s.
