With the Castle Street development, the rail electrification, the City Of Culture and now Siemens, it really seems things are on the up.
They've actually doubled the original investment to £160 million and are now building the blades at a new factory in Paull. APB are putting £150 million in for a total of £360 million. Here's the official announcement. http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Siem...al-statement/story-20846855-detail/story.html
Yes that will happen, but so what? That's not Siemens fault, they have said throughout that one of the main barriers to the development was a lack of sufficiently skilled local workforce. They have therefore made no secret whatsoever that in the early days the vast majority of the better jobs at the plant will be filled by non-locals. These non-locals however will either move to the area or stay in the area five days a week thus the local economy still massively benefits. Indeed, if I lived in Hull I'd be opening a B&B as close as possible to the site. Key to the development is an academy where the required education and training will be provided post young people completing secondary education to ensure long-term the jobs are filled by local people.
Apparently, there's a couple of hotel chains that have been waiting for this announcement before going ahead with new developments, expect new hotel announcements shortly.
There's a rumour that 'Dr' Ass mis-understood 'Siemens' and wanted to re-name Spurn Point. Think about it......
I believe one of them is tied into a new south stand development at Craven Park. Which one is Alexandra Dock? Is it the on the first roundabout after saltend going towards town? Great news though!
Its the one with the massive ABP sign on the wall of the roundabout. I had a walk around the site with Matt Jukes (clang!) and it is massive. It'll be a hell of a job though, there's walls of a dock which were listed!
How long will this development take to build? Bit pointless if it's going to be filled with Eastern Europeans.
I imagine Trinity Quays rested on this decision, as a large part was/is conference facilities. Apparently they've gone back to the 'slider' design after the '*** packet' was deemed unsuitable. It would be nice if the Cornmill Hotel could get brought back to life because of this - it isn't too far from the site at all.
Alexandra Dock has 2 entrances - one from the West, which is accessed via the Victoria Dock roundabout off Mount Pleasant, and the other, at the Eastern end, is accessed via the same roundabout as you take to get a P&O ferry.
I thought the Cornmill was being converted into one bad flats by the council, or did that get binned? The biggest waste of a building in Hull is obviously the Lord Line, if that could be made into a hotel and conference facility it really would be the icing on the cake. Unfortunately, as it would cost twice as much as a new build, it's not likely to happen anytime soon.
Not sure. Last I heard the council had gained funding to 'spruce it up' to make it look less of an eyesore to the public. I think it was in the other thread I mentioned Derry getting the funding from City of Culture to convert a former army barracks to host the Turner Prize - perhaps Lord Line could do the same?
The Lord Line's biggest problem is it's size, when you buy a knackered building to develop, four floors of rotting concrete in a building with such a large footprint is a hell of an undertaking.
Also looks like they are finally doing something with the old petrol station on Anlaby Road, near to HRI. Not sure if it's going to be another one, there was talk of a Maccy Ds at one point. But that couldn't happen because of the ground pollution from the old petrol pipes. Would like the HEY trust to buy the land next to Fountain street and build a multi-storey that is so desperately needed.
Is that where the massive disused metal building is? The council should open the whole bloody lot up for match day parking, they'd make a killing.
What was the turnover figure Ehab discussed they were in talks with, I cant remember but do bookies have that kind of turnover.
