Sky Bet Championship: Kevin Bond believes QPR's injury problems could be down to age

    Last Updated: 18/03/14 12:46pm

Kevin Bond admits some of the injury problems which have hindered QPR's promotion bid are down to their ageing squad.

Rangers' 30-somethings such as Andrew Johnson, Yossi Benayoun, Luke Young and Bobby Zamora have all struggled for fitness at various times this season.

Add to that the impact injuries suffered to players like top scorer Charlie Austin and midfielder Ale Faurlin and Rangers' treatment room has been busy throughout the campaign.

And assistant manager Bond admits some of Rangers' more experienced players have struggled to cope with the demands of a Championship promotion race.

"One or two of the lads have got maintenance issues with their bodies, perhaps because of the age they are," he said.

"They've got to look after their bodies. One or two can't train every day. There's very little training being done. It's all about rest."

Zamora did make a successful return to action on Saturday, climbing off the bench to score his first goal in more than a year in the 3-0 win over Yeovil.

But Rangers are still playing catch-up on the automatic promotion places with Burnley well clear in second spot.

"I think from Bobby's point of view he's always just wanted to help the team if he can," added Bond.

"He hasn't been able to do himself justice because of the injuries he's had, but he's had a prolonged period of training.

"It was a good day for him and hopefully he'll be around us for the rest of the season and helping our quest to get up. He's going to have to look after himself.

"We can only control what we do. If (Burnley) keep winning then we've got no chance, and if they slip up, we have.

"We've got so many games now, Saturday, Tuesday, some older players around us might need a rest. You're going to need all your squad."

So Simpson, Austin and Traore are all old men?
Hill and Dunne have hardly missed a game all season.

I think he's telling us something we already new would happen, but they haven't addressed it & when we need the players like now we are stretched.

Its like signing Johnson, you don't have to be Einstein to know he will miss 90% of games and yet they make the same mistake over and over again.

I'm quite calm about it now, I've become a bit detached and mellow now I'm boycotting games until hes gone.

The squad is Redknapps squad. Bought by him, loaned in by him, loaned out by him. The old age of the squad and hence the number of injuries shouldnt surprise them.

Unless they're stupid and dont know what they're doing that is!!!!!!!!

Of course, if this is correct, why have they got yet another thirty something in trial?

Older players are more injury-prone? No sh*t Sherlock! - It starts from the top, our so-called manager can barely walk so he's built a team in his own image. Still, we can get the revolving door well-oiled for the summer cull...
