They're only at 11.5k RPM, still yet to hit the limit of 15k so I believe there is more noise to come.
Yeah... I agree. They need to do something about that. The sound of an F1 car is part of the drama. It's like watching a football game played behind closed doors. It's just flat. Surely they can do something about this. Just nick the muffler off a chavy hatchback.
I've read that it's because of the fuel flow regs that their running 11.5k. Running at 15k would then give no benefit and so nobody will do it. I hope that isn't true because it's way too quiet at the moment. They sound alright on the onboards, but it doesn't transfer to TV at all.
I'm currently watching the 12 hours of Sebring, and i stand by my statement that these new F1 engines sound like LMP cars.
From a public 'TV' perspective, what is heard is very much the result of a broadcaster's production. If they continue to treat the sound as if expecting V8's, they will sound quiet by comparison. However, broadcasters will soon learn to appreciate the subtle differences, just as they did back in the 80s. And as soon as Silver gets to Spa again (thereby witnessing the reality rather than TV reception), he will attest to this! The V6s sound different. Of course they do. But the real difference is only witnessed at track-side (or in the car). Eventually TV production teams will catch up. To my ear, the V6s sing a better tune than the V8s, despite fewer decibels. – Then again, what a shame they couldn't be real big hitters in excess of 'x' litres! Each to their own of course (and yes, this is wandering off topic), but I ask you to listen to the most fundamental, blood-curdling example of an internal combustion engine in human experience. Forget the driver, it does not matter; just close your eyes and listen carefully. Then tell me your guts didn't react with some peculiar, and very fundamental instinct… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U86lf-LRXiE
Cosi... Given the sound of the current engines, or a honking v12 or v10, which would you prefer personally? Which one makes your skull rattle, shakes the fillings from your teeth and makes your hair stand on end? I love the way these engines lay down the power, but it just lacks theatre. I want to love them, but they leave me wanting more.
Hi Sarge! Don't you think theatre is a product of 'production'? As for me, like anyone I suppose, my preferences are personal. I'm sure most would agree preferences are the result of experience. Personally, I like the sound of 'power' (sic); but I acknowledge this may manifest differently to others. More specifically, it depends upon the particular engine in question. Perhaps I should add that I've driven cars with engines of most (if not all) configurations? Whatever⦠A personal conclusion is that V6 turbos are not at the bottom of my personal pile. You want me to go further? Well, in terms of a sound to provoke an unearthly smile in this particular human being, the Panoz (recorded reasonably well in the video) will take some beating. Perhaps we are left with the greatest sense of awe by those things which are most alien? Certainly for me at least, the big-engined Panoz Le Mans car was the most unearthlyâ¦
I think FOM has emphasized on the notice of the croud in its production to give the impression the fans are a part of the show when the dagger of double points slits our throats....
Sorry, but tiredness has made me do this:
I quite like the sound with the turbo whistle and a bit of electrical sounds, they almost sound like bikes at some points, but the volume needs to be increased with ref to the commentary.
Wwwweeeeeellll, just a tad too quiet for me, lost its magic for me. Liked the new format otherwise, but not quite what I expected, more noise please !! Intelligent drive by Nico, nice to see Vettel struggling, sorry but can't stand the bloke, don't know why !!.
I like the sound of the cars. Sort of like a Moto GP bike with a turbo. I agree with how loud they are though. In terms of sound, it would have been better if they stayed at 18,000 rpm, but I guess the engine wouldn't be able to withstand that. It's something we'll just have to get used to. I hate seeing people complain about it, because F1 is not just about the sound. Its about pushing technology to the limit, finding the best driver in the world with the best team in the world. F1 is different to other motor sports because it not just the speed like NASCAR, or just the overtaking like touring cars. It's a combination of things. There's nothing wrong with Formula 1, the regulations are there to challenge the engineers and the drivers. They are not gimmicks
I suspect it has nothing to do with him more the smug gloating fan-boy effect (think Man U), or because he spnked your favourite for the last 4/5 years, or he's german and you're old enough to remember the war, or you were susceptible to Webbers paranoid delusional outbursts
Would love to go to Spa but sadly Seb has a court order on me after I instigated a mass crowd of F1 fans to jump him to buy us some beer when he entered Stavelot after the race. Sadly when they opened the car which was an Infiniti we found out it was Webber, they might of cheered but I groaned as my plan failed... Then the riot police came to make sure be behaved But on a serious note these cars always sound better in person, turbo's sound amazing during the braking period *sighs* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCKim7cEW7E#t=24 Just that little flutter of noise always makes me smile and I have no idea why tbh.
