One of our former players died on Wednesday http://www.safc.com/news/features/2014/march/potd-calvin-palmer Only played 42 times for us apparently but I remember him as a utility player - I seem to recall one game when Monty got injured I think he tipped a shot onto the bar and injured himself landing and Calvin went in goal and we went on to win the game - think it was his former club Stoke but I can remember we were singing "Palmer for England" after he had made a couple of good saves anyway RIP
His name doesn't ring a bell with me, although I'm sure I must have saw him if he played when Monty was around..
I was at that game Gus. He even extracted the urine out of Monty by mimicking the way he used to rub his boot down his sock prior too kicking the ball out. RIP CP.
Seen him play a lot for us.he played around the same time as Gordon Harris.he was a utility player mostly midfield he was ok for us but no world beater RIP.
Sad to say but I don't remember him. Always sad when an old Roker Park-ite passes away. Another piece of history gone.
Just checked on www.thestatcat.co.uk and that game was on April 6th 1968 and we won 3-1 - jesus i'm older than I thought!
Remember a great story about Calvin Palmer when he said to the referee " what would you do if I called you a c#nt? " The ref said " I'd send you off " Calvin Palmer " what would you do if I thought you were a c#nt?" The ref said " I couldn't do anything because if he only thought it, I wouldn't know " Calvin Palmer then said " That's ok then, I think you're a c#nt "
