Four police officers received minor injuries after trouble flared during a loyalist parade in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast last night.

Missiles were launched at them as they struggled to restore calm during the Tour of the North.

They sustained bruising and one officer suffered a broken tooth.

'The police response was balanced and proportionate. Balancing the rights of the interested parties is never easy. A parade like this is looked upon from many viewpoints, including those of local residents, marchers and protesters,' a PSNI spokesman said.

'The main priority of police is to protect communities,' he said.

The marchers set off from the Orange Hall at Clifton Street at around 7.30pm, amid significant police presence.

When they arrived at Woodvale Parade, procession leaders handed over a letter of protest to police over the Parades Commission's decision not to let two feeder parades pass the Ardoyne shop fronts on the edge of a mainly nationalist area.

Trouble erupted soon after at the top of Twaddell Avenue, with protesters throwing missiles at police and officers in riot gear moving in.

Whereas Irish Republicans just prefer to blow them up in their cars, nail/pipe bomb them, or just shoot them in cold blood <doh>

Every single year we get these stories which proves how little Northern Ireland has changed and is the reason I want out of this bigotted, backwards, piece of **** of a country. People need to realise that everyone is entitled to celebrate their heritage. I do not have a problem with the marching just like any intelligent people do not have a problem with my enjoying GAA matches and Fleadh Cheoils.

It's like reading about Glasgow. There's tons of the marches here. I love the way they stop outside the Chapel and bang the drum.

We just sing even louder. <ok>

Saw enough of these marches when i was posted out there, whilst i totally agree that everyone has the right to march to sing to celebrate their nationality surely its about time these marches were routed to avoid the clashes they inevitably meet?

The marchers should be made to walk past my machine gun nest.
