Martin Foyle with the first? Nick Holmes with a couple? I'm stretching the memory now. My First game was Terry Paine's last at the time (they did call him back for a few more later that season) and was Saints v Hereford in the old Div 2. Paine played for Hereford.
I feel there is a government conspiracy covering up the fact that time has changed. You and I know, for instance, that 1994 was yesterday, but they would have us believe that it was twenty years ago. They must think we are stupid!
Mine was Newcastle at home 1995 @ The Dell, 1-0 down until 86th min, came back to win 3-1! Think Neil Shipperly got the winner in the 90th minute.
My first game was the 2-0 win over Liverpool. 2 goals for Danny Wallace. My Pompey supporting Dad and his Saints supporting brother took me That 4-1 was a great game too. Paul Rideout was great for us.
20 August 1966. Saints' first ever game in League Division One, and also Ron Davies' debut game for us. A 1-1 draw with also newly-promoted Man City with goals from Terry Paine and Mike Summerbee, on a beautiful summer's afternoon at the dear old Dell. My introduction to the team that have been one of the loves of my life, through thick and thin, ever since.
I presume this "competition" will be won by someone who overcame illness or travels great distances or who lost a loved one, or whatever else is normally part of the "x-factor slow-motion, piano & violin, emotional montage" ?? Don't mind the club engaging with fans & wanting to hear stories, but what's with "immortalise in club history" ? Football is a team game & thus, the supporters are also a collective. I started supporting saints because my Dad did & my grandfather before him. Now, what have I won?
Have to agree, though it's a nice thing to get supporters to share memories and stories. Making it a competition and for one story to seem better than another is a little unnecessary. Could also lead to some artistic licence in some stories. May I suggest CBK that your grandfather got shot in the war but was saved because the bullet hit his Saints pin badge
They are trying to connect with the fans. Since ignoring the fans was a major gripe, they deserve an E for effort. Why not talk about a deep family connection, CBK...they might like that as an example of our fans. Wait a cotton-picking minute...CBK as an example of our fan base!...Katharina would sell the club tomorrow
My mate's middle name is Sunderland because he was born on the day Sunderland won the cup in 73. Makes me wish I was born on 1st May 1976 and my parents were even more eccentric than they are. Maybe that would have been a winner Oh would have to change my Dad from a Pompey fan as well. lol
She'd learn more about football supporters talking to me for 20 minutes than she would talking to an average Jester Hat, facepainted oddball happy clappy fan for a week. I don't support the club for the club to give me kudos. If they are genuine in opening up channels of communication with the fans, then I sincerely welcome that. We shall see if it leads to anything, or its just an appeasement.
