Who do you think is the player that has left you, and gone on to achieve the most? From my limited knowledge of your team, I would have to say Steve Bruce must be near the top of the list.
Matty Jarvis would have to be the most recent achiever, Tony Cascarino is another who's gone on to have a sensational career after leaving us but quite a lot of our players who go on to higher levels don't really grab that many headlines - Andrew Crofts (formerly of norwich), Simeon Jackson (the same) and Paulo Gazzingina (of Southampton)
Got to be Ryan Bertrand some caps for England on books of Chelsea and on loan to Villa at the moment and destined for good things
I was going to say personally I felt Steve Bruce, but thinking about it a bit longer you could argue Cascarino because of his appearances in the World Cup. Surely playing in the World Cup Finals has to be the pinnacle of any players career.
Simeon will never be forgotten by Norwich fans, as he scored the goal at Fratton Park that got us promoted to the PL. Steve Bruce was - in my opinion - unlucky that at the time he was playing, there were some very good centre halves. He must be the best player never to have been capped by England. Good call for Cascarino brb. Some might argue that it was only the Republic that he played for, but they had some cracking players in that team, and they still had to qualify, and they put on a decent show as well in the finals.
Technically he never did play for us he was taken out of our youth team when he was 15 I believe? So never played for us but came though our youth set up. Another one who could go on to have a great career is Luke Freeman currently of Stevenage, who was the youngest ever player to play in the FA Cup when he played for us, got signed by Arsenal but for whatever reason was let go but looks to have the potential to go back to the top flight one day, maybe even Norwich who knows!
I'd like to add Gavin Peacock in that he was a someone who went on to have a great career at the highest level.
Nyron Nosworthy played at international level after leaving the Gills and ended up in the premiership. Dave Peach left Gills and played for the FA cup winning team (Southampton) in the 1976 final.
Going back a bit children, but let's not forget Gill's players Mel Machin and before him Ron Saunders, who both went on to manage top premiership clubs.
I remember them both at norwich. Ron Saunders being the first manager to get Norwich promoted to top flight football back in '72. Also remember Mel Machin as a midfielder for us and also as part of Ken Brown's management team
I first saw Ron playing for Tonbridge against Folkestone in a Kent Senior Cup at Priestfield in the late fifties. Tonbridge lost 2 - 0, but he must have impressed because Gills signed him. He scored a lot of goals for us, including 5 against Gorlestone in 1st Round FA Cup Game (Result 11 - 1 to Gills) I remember the 16 year old (third choice ) Gorlestone goalie going off in tears at the end. Gills sold him on to Portsmouth for what was then their record fee. I think he managed Manchester City and three of the Midlands biggest clubs as well.
Pretty sure Ron Saunders led Villa to win the European Cup? He certainly won the league with Aston Villa.
In recent years I would have to say Matt Jarvis, we could do with a Jarvis type player down the left wing for us now. Ian Cox and Brent Sancho deserve a mention as they were in The Trinidad & Tobago Squad for The 2006 World Cup.
And some might say he wasn't qualified to play for... FoM, weren't Cox & Sancho already internationals when they joined us? Didn't exactly 'go on' to bigger and better things. ihmo I'd say Steve Bruce, Tony Cascarino, Matty Jarvis & Ryan Bertrand would have to be the main contenders. The first 3 were magical when with us, and sadly we never got to see Ryan in a Gills shirt. No-one's mentioned Micky Adams. Had a good top flight career after leaving us.
Thought that was Tony Barton that won the European cup with Villa. I know Saunders won the league cup at Wembley on his 3rd consecutive attempt Twice we (Norwich) were the losing finalists. The second time was against Villa, and Kevin keelan was the first keeper to save a penalty there. sadly Ray Graydon scored from the follow up.
Danny Spiller is floggin some herby health thing on Twitter... living the dream so gota be worth a mention
