So you think he should have been captain for 10 years?

We have our bell-ends like any club. But to say that the whole of the ground was abusing him is the sort of thing that might have got noticed at the time. There are cameras and reporters there, after all. Suddenly, however, poor little Sol was being overlooked for the captaincy and abused by a whole ground...?

Yeah, right. Be interesting to see if his book-signing tour comes to Sunderland now. Obviously won't come to Newcastle as most of you lot are illiterate :)

I'm afraid for Sol there were too many far better choices for captain in his time. You have to remember the likes of Adams, Shearer, Ince, Beckham, maybe even Terry (?) were all around in his timeframe. Adams and Shearer were perfect captains. High level performers who demanded high standards from their teammates. They had that presence and were just ideal. Ince too to a lesser extent. All three had a superb win at all costs mentality. I really respected Campbell as a player. Like Ashley Cole, he always rocked up and performed for England. He took real pride in it. I'm not convinced he had the same presence or strength of character as the others mentioned though.

He could argue on the Beckham and Owen selections. Certainly the latter. Beckham was much maligned but personally I thought he was a terrific footballer. He grew into the captaincy too even if I felt there was a bit of PR to it at the time. Certainly against Greece, it was as good a performance by an Englishman you could wish to see. He seemed very popular within the squad and was a good ambassador. Owen was a ridiculous selection but he can't have managed many games as captain? Doesn't excuse Sunderland fans racially abusing him mind, that can never be condoned. The whole ground seems unlikely but that is just probably a figure of speech of what it felt like.

No racist element at all to his none selection as captain. Just seems a bit of a pathetic bitter remark or one made to sell a few copies. I think it may be the former and just a bit of bitterness. It reminds me of all the moaning about Kevin Phillips not getting selected for England despite winning the golden boot. It was a load of ****e when you looked at the strikers we had at the time. Andy Cole couldn't get a kick either despite him outscoring most strikers each season. Fowler couldn't get a kick despite his obvious talent. Les Ferdinand couldn't get a kick. Why? Two words - Alan Shearer. The best striker we have produced for goodness knows how long. Cole, Shearer, Sheringham, Ferdinand, Heskey, Owen, Barmby, Sutton, Phillips - there were a few to select from!

Worst racism might have been over by late 90's.
But Sol isn't first ex-player to mention SAFC, Garth Crooks was in the papers a couple of years back saying that Roker Park was the first place he ever encountered racism - monkey chants etc.

Like I say, we have our idiots and I have heard them meself. Was at Wimbledon once and John Fashanu got some "Fash-a-nu-ooh-ooh", before the idiots were rounded on by the majority. You go back to Garth Crooks' time and he probably got some at most grounds. But Sol Campbell is just a pillock. I saw his self-serving drivel on the Beeb website and talk about big-headed. Utter ****er...

Aye, you're right about Garth Crooks time, it was going on at majority if not all grounds, and anyone who claims otherwise is talking crap.
Sol Campbell is just another forgotten footballer. If the book is going to sell, it needs something controversial in it otherwise it'll just bomb and the tabloids wouldn't be interested in serialisation it.
You're lucky, how long did we court him, before he signed only to be an abject failure at the end of his career.

I think his effeminate and quiet manner would have had much more to do with Sol's lack of appearances as captain, than his race... Well, you know, if the other outstanding candidates who actually captained the side during his era had also disappeared mysteriously.

That would have been a much more original angle than the whole race thing. He's made himself look a right tool <ok>
