Have to agree, they could be lambs to the slaughter or rabbits in the headlights if played tonight and don't come up to scratch. It isn't their fault that they were transferred by the Rolo to play in England and if he insists they play...
They were unlikely to be picked up by another club, not playing at the other rolo clubs and were offered a trip into the unknown and a promise of football at higher level than they were playing. You find me a footballer in the western world who would have said no.... Human nature always lets the over ambitious and the over-promoted to bite off more than they can chew and land up in the brown stuff. Yes they could have said no but would now be operating as a different type of sweeper than they thought. Let us hope than they are better than we have previously seen and come good on the night. Reserve the criticism for the puppet master not the puppets
I have to disagree with the loans being part of RD's game, they might have come to him and said I am not played and not happy with the situation. RD could then have turned around and said, why not get first team football at Charlton, and here they are. But, yes, they will be slaughtered if results don't pick up and they will be the first to feel the wraith of the fans.
On my way to the game, and realised I couldn't remember the managers name. Pointless post of the day goes to me.
It was me who asked him to promise if he did leave it would not be to one of Roland the Rats other clubs. We all know he is good, and anything we have that is promising will be pushed towards Liege. Charlton is not Charlton anymore. I was going to renew, now i am not. Neither is anyone else in my family. I will not put my cash towards a Belgian side, we have been murdered by this bloke. The sad thing is that the whole of English football can see this for what it is, as can most Charlton fans. Anyone out there who genuinely believes our league position is down to CP is naive, everyone of the season ticket holders i ever spoke to said we would be lucky not to go straight down this season before the first ball was even kicked. You cannot survive in this division with a depleted and aging League One squad. Our best performers from that season have either been released, sold, out injured for large periods or no longer have the legs due to aging another couple of years. Powell is not stupid, he knows full well we needed signings, and sadly we needed more than just a few to compete in this division. The youngsters were thrown in to bulk up the numbers, and if it wasn't for Poyet and Cousins adjusting so quickly things would be even worse results wise. Currently i honestly see no difference in staying up or going down, even if we start winning every game it will not put a smile on my face because we will not see any of the profits of our own success should things turn around. If we get promoted to the prem with this bloke in charge how much of the revenue do you honestly think would be seen by us? This is the footballing equivalent of money laundering, it will all go to Liege because the rules allow it. Yesterday, the club i love vanished right in front of me. With Powell in charge there was a small glimmer of hope that RD might realise we are our own club, and not only that but we are his best chance at making money in the world of football. With Powell gone and a yes man appointed as a Head Coach (the universal term for a yes man) we now have nobody at the club who will stand up for our history and our independence. I am praying we get rid of RD soon, i would rather see my Charlton in the conference than a Belgian replica
Just for Scratch (606s answer to Brian Sewell) This particular theatre critic has just taken his place in the Upper Circle at the Valley
Then I hope you enjoyed the majority of charlton fans doing what you believed they would not. Applauding the former manager you appear to despise.
I can imagine, Jimmy. After all, it will prove the 'naïve' Anti-Powell brigade were right to call for his head. Charlton Athletic is more than one man. It is the fans, the badge, the stadium, the history, and the area. No one and nothing will keep me away from my club.
That dig wasnt worthy of you Ponders. If we start to win every match without significant loan signings before the end of the month, I for one will accept that I was wrong about CP. I do think that we may have enough to stay up just, but I believe CP could have done that as well. Will I renew my season ticket? Not certain at the moment. i agree that the club is bigger than any player or manager but it is also not a commodity to be abused for the greater glory of the Ensign of Lord Roly or any other Belgian club he wants to own.
I've made great efforts to be less catty, SVC, but I couldn't resist that one. Anyway, I'm sure Jimmy will offer me a vigorous rejoinder. I agree with you about Roland and the way he is going to run our club, but I will not allow him to ruin my love of all things Charlton. I will be on the inside with my finger on the pulse, and I will certainly be making my feelings known in due course. Never cross Ponders and expect to get away with it.
Yes I've noticed the new statesmanlike Ponders. I was going to post recently about the proud history of the cardigan, which goes back to the brave officers who led the Charge of the Light Brigade but I thought "I bet Ponders knows that already".
You say "the great majority of Charlton fans"...but did you notice how many of us were in the ground last night?
Yes I did and for a midweek game for bottom of the league club it wasnt bad but many had also stayed away in protest at the way Powell was treated. You can always look at life at least two ways Vol. Your job in the house, it doesn't have anything to do with national statistics does it???
That was the grief! Plus after sunday, I daresay a fair few did'nt want to part with hard earned cash to watch a surrender. Mind you, from what I've read, we played at least 45 minutes better than sunday.
Just read this. Huge, hyperbolic over reaction even by the standards of what we have seen in recent days.
