No, I had plenty of mates who did(North Bank SC), but I was entirely punk at that time. And I definitely wouldn't have a pink Vespa...
Lol. Hull Hawthorns sc was the one I use to visit...Went in bass house a few times. Sorry about that I didn't mean was that you who had the vespa mentioned. Was just a well know Hull Scooter at one time though looked a bag of ****e. Chaz was right about the NY Hotel and loose women at one time.
Alderman 'Sir' Leo Schultz's wife was big (or main) shareholder in D J Broady 'Spacemade' demolition company. (Allegedly...)
^Now everything is done by 'NPS Humber'... the same 'NPS Humber' who are responsible for all the council's property lets/sales and are the same 'NPS Humber' who built the new Craven Park North Stand despite having no previous stadia construction experience, and 'allegedly' made numerous 'cut backs' when building it.... I wonder why?!! feathering*cough*nest
Greetings from sunny Brisbane. Born and bred in Hull in 1948 but moved to Australia in 1977. This site has been great for keeping me up to date with the “Tigers” (no I am not getting involved in the name change issue it’s just the name I have always used when talking about my home town soccer club). I have also enjoyed O/T subjects such as this one. In the mid sixties I worked as a trainee cost and bonus surveyor for Trollope and Colls who were building the Hull Royal Infirmary (By the way the tiles on the outside of the building were falling off before we even handed it over). Most of the qualified surveyors were from down south and would not lower themselves to drink in the local pubs so used the wine bar in the New York Hotel. The wine bar fronted onto Anlaby Road but can’t remember if it was run by the New York Hotel or it had a different name. As a trainee I had to keep in the good books by going in there with them after the working day. It was all very gentlemanly and la-di-da in there and completely out of my league. The prices were extortionate and took most of my wages. To add insult to misery I was nearly always expected to buy the first round and more often than not the last round. It was a struggle to save enough of my wages to afford the Friday night skinful in the Broadway Hotel and then on to the Locarno to try and score (Girls not drugs in those days). I have to say I had no idea there was a ballroom in the New York Hotel in the sixties. Was it for formal dancing, foxtrot etc, or was it Rock n Roll.
HCC have no vision at all. It could be made into almost anything with some TLC and vision. They take the very easy option to knock it down.
this to me is an outrage - why cant we hold onto some of our old buildings , why are owners allowed to let buildings run into disrepair ? A lick of paint is one thing , but allowing a building to rot is disgraceful I thought the council had an obligation to take ownership of a building that wasnt being maintained to a safe level - if not then this should be made law !!! Also what happened to the old place on Osbourne Street ? it was there a couple of years ago wasnt it ? Our council is **** !
Slightly off topic but I went down Whitefriargate on Thursday for the first time in ages. Every other shop was empty. They've even put posters on the windows to make the shops look occupied. One shop doorway had 3 scummers and a dog sat in it sharing a few cans and gobbing on the floor every 2 seconds. This council needs to cut the local business rates and get these shops trading again. City of Culture... no chance. Oh and while I'm on one Princes Quay is the same. The city centre is on it's arse.
Majority of empty units of Whitefriargate are on the Southern side of the street - owned by Trinity House. It's their rents which are too high. As for Princes Quay, the people who run the place remind me of the Hull City marketing department.
I love all the O/T threads about Hulls changing landscape through the years. They bring back all great memories. I've missed Hull , since the day I left (1985), but can't see us moving back unfortunately. The New York pub was the second "town" pub I went in , the other being the Gingerman in the Bus station. I was still in fifth form at Hull Grammar. The only lad in that school with a " Flat Top Crew Cut" .
You said you'd been there. Assumed it was to see some entertainment, not to use its hotel facilities, as it's an old music hall.
Went in for a couple of pints. After being a music hall, it was just a drinking hole, full of 'characters' (or so it appeared to a young me and my mate.....
