So now that our noisy neighbours have opened up 6th place for Europe this surely has to be our aim between now and the end of the season?

Although we're unlikely to finish 6th, it's far from impossible and would actually trump our 5th place finish a couple of years ago IMO.

If the FA cup draw goes our way (Arsenal vs City final) as low as 7th could result in Europe.

Not sure how some feel given how it affected us last season but I'd love us to qualify for it. I think Pardew would be much better for our/his experiences in it last season and would play pretty much our reserves in the group games.

As I said it's unlikely but it's definitely "something to play for" between now and May.

To be fair we played quite a few reserves last time. The problems will remain the same. We have a small squad, small coaching staff. The preparation problem therefore remains. I think we'd fare better but still think it stretches resources at a club like us. As you say unlikely to be an issue, but I think given the summer of rebuilding we have ahead, it might be a terrible time for us should we actually manage it.

One thing for sure is we look dead certs for the top 10 so it will have been a successful season regardless. That is a good position to be in. You just can't but wonder where we'd be with investment/resources. Pardew is much maligned but if you look at his record here against the backdrop he has faced in terms of investment/off field issues, you have to wonder why. I'd love to see a top manager come in just to see how they'd get on without the big budgets under his circumstances.

Still shouldn't have pushed his head into Meyler though <laugh>

Then we try and win it.

That's generally the aim for clubs in cup competitions.

And we may also get to visit Milan to watch our team play <cheers>

We might get to go to and play in Milan again. That's a city in Italy by the way Fredor. You get to go there sometimes when you qualify for Europe (not that you would know much about that then).

Let me simplify it for you, if Newcastle were to reach this cup it would be akin to making an ice block then putting it in the oven

You never know, one day your team might actually win something instead of falling at the final hurdle. No one remembers the losing team in a final, Fredor. Now go and get your prayer mat out and hope you win enough games to stay in the big boy's league <magic>

Sunderland are a very poor team and it was probably in hindsight good that they lost today, if they stayed up + Europe they would suffer massively next season with all the games! I think they'd struggle to get a point and would easy finish with atleast -100 GD

Funny how the Europa League would have been called a major tournament if that lot had qualified. Now that we have a chance to once again play in Europe it's Mickey Mouse. Using that logic the final today was for a Mickey Mouse trophy.

I would comfortably rank the Europa League above the League cup and probably the FA cup too. Domestic cups only really have a handful of clubs in I would comfortably say are better than us and some of those I'd make us favourites against with a home draw. The Europa League this season still has - amongst others - Benfica, Betis, Fiorentina, Juventus, Lyon, Napoli, Porto, Salzburg, Sevilla, Tottenham and Valencia.

I think falling at the last hurdle is significantly better than Newcastles tripping over the starting blocks

Unless that last hurdle has a trapdoor under it.
