I was talking to the bloke who runs the charity raising for The Hull People's Memorial, and he told me about how Malta received the George's Cross for it's war efforts. The Maltese president visited Hull to view the bomb damage and he said that Hull deserved the George's Cross much more than Malta does.

I think you can and can't blame the World Wars for Hull's fortunes since. It's more a case of the city being in-directly suffering since the war, because of it.

Not only did Hull pass up on gaining funding to re-build after rejecting Abercrombie's masterplan for Hull, but I think the Government saw it as a lost cause due to the damage. A lot of Hull was rebuilt by the people of Hull itself. Local businessmen saw it rebuilt, for example the CECIL cinema on the cross-roads opposite Anlaby Rd was the first built post-war cinema in the UK. I imagine the government was happy to let Hull rot, and didn't expect the fishing industry to appear and keep it alive.

You can see that ever since WWII, successive governments have been determined to create 'cluster' 'city regions' for people to live/work in. You only have to look at the billions pumped into post-war Leeds, compared to post-war Hull to see this - Hull was heavily bombed, Leeds was barely touched... Leeds has probably had 10 times the amount of funding that Hull has since WWII.
We had a boom during the Victorian/Edwardian era which saw a lot of grand buildings made, unfortunately the next 'boom' was during the 50s/60s which saw a lot of buildings appear, which are still around today and look dated... it seems Hull's next 'boom' is overdue, but I don't doubt it's time will come again, as it has throughout history.

    And neither do I.

Suggest you look into how the citizens of Plymouth coped with the Luftwaffe.

Similar to my grandad. He was in the navy. After the war he didn't hate the Germans, but he always hated fish.

Huge clubs have gone down before its the small clubs that usually stay down, just a thought.

And not a particularly profound or interesting one at that.

it was the guy from was tenders terry, think he is the bald guy who is with Bianca . Apparently he used to play for Southend. Tbh if I supported Southend I'd love any premier league club.

It was a **** tie for Southend to be fair. They sold out which is the most they could do against us. They could hope for an upset, but really our second XI (not reserves, the second XI of our 25, largely the promotion team from last season) should be able to deal with a side at that level so it wasn't really likely.

Had they got a bigger club they'd have had the TV money (and the chance of them playing a virtual youth team). Or an away tie even at somewhere like Newcastle or Sunderland would have given their fans a day out (who doesn't like an away game) and greater ticket receipts to share in. Even drawing another lower league club, it would have been an initial disappointment but at least they'd have had a realistic chance of getting through.

Dont worry about it. Talksport are clueless. Apart from Alan Brazil ALL there presenters are hopeless. Nevermind an ability to have a balanced view.

Almost as bad as those that move to the east East Riding once they earn a bit of money and run us down. Still make use of our facilities though like.

It's time for toll booths on the borders.

Let's face it until 5 years ago our history and reputation was shocking, think of all the clubs that have achieved more than us, Notts County, Barnsley, Oxford, Luton, Bury, Millwall, Wimbledon...etc.

Yes we're doing well now, but it will take a while for peoples perceptions of us to change, 6 months in the top flight hasn't quite compensated for decades of mediocrity.

It was tit for tat bombing. When Hull was bombed we (The Allies) bombed Dresden. And so on. Liverpool's civic leaders went squealing to the Government after one such air raid and asked to be omitted. They wanted no part of it. Interesting today on Albert Dock, Liverpool make more of a big deal then Hull does about their involvement in WW2 without mentioning anywhere that they wanted and asked permission to throw the towel in.

The two rugby league clubs have got away with it for years.
Yet no-one draws comparisions between them and tiny clubs like Castleford, Wakefield, Featherstone, Widnes, Sheffield Eagles etc etc all who have won more silverware then the two Hull clubs put together.

Not sure what this has to do with Hull City's perceived reputation.

I'm completely baffled by how people are blaming the Germans for Hull City AFC being an under performing club for much of our history?!?!

We'd never been in the top flight until 2008 and rarely even been close. When we did get there it was after a rapid rise up the leagues from the lowest of the low. Several people have said to my "it's weird for a club like Hull to be in the Premier League". It will take years of success/survival to change that perception. Clubs like Bradford and Swindon have had their odd season in the top flight but you don't think of them as top flight teams where as must people in the UK would think of Leeds as one.

As for the City of Hull most people in the UK have the perception it's a dump and the rest of Europe let alone the world have never heard of it.

Nobody has, the discussion is about Hull, not about Hull City.
