Whilst i agree wityh most of that mate, its the last sentence that i may query.
I've always believed that Steven Gerrard would have been the best DCM on the planet if played there. The problem is that it would have been such a waste of the rest of his talent. just my opinion of course.
over the past years (esp when he played us last year) he's slipped back into that role & totally controlled the game.

Hard to argue with that. Gerard is world class IMO. Rodgers has played him as a deep lying midfielder for the last few months and he has been superb. His vision and football brain allows him to play in any of the midfield positions. I love watching him play.
I still think no player epitomised all the roles of a DCM better than Keane. Genuinely not an Irish thing as I don't mind saying that I despise him for what he did in Saipan.

DMF in short is a player who can read the game and turn up exactly on time at the right place

Henry is the best at our club at doing this IMO

Cards on the table Paul, he may well be the best at the club in that position, but do you think he is good enough for a promotion chasing team? I suspect you would agree he's not up to that role in the Premiership.

Not intended as a criticism of him, he was bought to do a job and he does it to the best of his ability.

His reading of the game is pretty good and he is relatively mobile but he is an average footballer IMO. He has the positional awareness yah none of our other fit midfielders have.

I would have been thrilled to sign Parker on a short term contract last summer. He's excellent in that role and still Prem class. I thought the club made a mistake in the last transfer window in not bringing in a better DCM.

Is there any Prem club currently playing with a back 5? Three CBs and two attacking FBs.

Think Liverpool have reverted to this system occasionally but not sure.

They have sometimes but theres no point using 3 CBs against what usually is a loan forward, they just use 2 CBs and 2 attacking FBs.

    Flyer,
What England manager tinkered with that system years ago, was it Venables or Hoddle?
I think it involved Sol Campbell

I can't remember but it only works against a 442 which is not really to relevant these days.
We could never play it either as you need mobile CBs to cover long balls to the channels plus we only have 3 CBs in the squad.

All this tactics-nonsense; all we need to do is score more than the opposition, then we are all happy:wink:

Good thinking harry but that usually means scoring more than one goal a game.

I'm finding it hard to sift out any legitimate points from this.

These weren't your own personal pearls of wisdom, every man & his dog saw and cited this stuff- myself included. In fact the first place I saw mention of a lack of pace at CB was in one of Clive's articles.
You're right, people DID see things before they happened. So far before they happened...that they were seeing something that didn't exist yet. I'm going to go out on a limb and say our next manager will be rubbish- then remind you of this prediction when we lose a couple of games under him. See, I can do it too!

It's yet to be seen how Redknapp will do this season- but I think he did a fantastic job in the summer turning a demoralised relegation side into one challenging for promotion. You often say this squad is too old for purpose...but then say it should be walking the league, as a stick to beat Arry with. Which one is it, because you can't have it both ways?

You've been saying the equivalent of "I told you so" on threads for days. Usually in the form of..."I said months ago...". Please point out the "so much bollocks" I've spoken though?

Did you just have a complete brain freeze when you wrote this? How could you come to the conclusion that I expect us to do that? I said I'd happily start doing that again, because at the time you were saying everything was rubbish. No it wasn't- things were going well! How we wish we could string results like that together again!

4 strikers were bought in this window, wasn't that an attempt to fix the "total lack of goalscoring"?
I'm not sure Charlie's 15 can be called a "total lack" though. Nor was it preordained that the clean sheet run would dry up sufficiently to knock results. Obviously the consecutive game streak was gona end... But there was no reason we couldn't continue with a mean defence and get clean sheets 2/3 games. More than sufficient.

I think it's great that so many postmen, software engineers, sales staff and middle managers, etc. know more about football and running a football team than Harry - even more so when you consider that they know about 1% of what is actually going on behind the scenes.

And judging from the comments on this forum, we also have some great man-managers and motivators too.

It warms my heart to know that there is such talent (and clairvoyance) behind the club, ensuring us a safe and successful future.

    ooh, sarky.

Obviously we are all talking bollocks, me in particular, and fortunately there are no qualifications required to join in. It's just entertainment, none of it matters. Knowing better than the manager on the basis of **** all whether at the ground, in the pub or on here has been a part of being a supporter since time immemorial.

You obviously use postmen, software engineers, sales staff and middle managers in a derogatory way there, what have you got against them? From your tone I assume that you do something very important and praiseworthy. Well done.

<laugh> There's a lot of truth, of course, but it also has to be said that these threads can be interesting and instructive, particularly posts from members that have played or are playing the game at a reasonably high level.

And sometimes, just sometimes, the fans do know better than the manager...

Why derogatory? I think the point is that there are a lot of armchair experts, with no professional footballing knowledge/insight, who've magically acquired vast reserves of self-proclaimed expertise. The majority of us know nowt' but at least we admit to it. We don't attempt to elevate our opinions to a position of superiority. It grates when some consistently believe themselves to be more informed than the owners/management- pretentious delusion.

I think it was Hoddle that sometimes employed three at the back.

Did he use Adams Campbell and Southgate, perhaps?

Why single out those professions in a post critical of anybody who posts an opinion on here?

I totally agree that the vast majority of us on here are have no expertise - I would classify myself as opinion rich and expertise poor - but this board is about sharing opinions, however ill informed. Sure, some poster think they actually do know better, but who cares? If people don't like to see the owners, manager or players being criticised (and defended) this isn't the place for them. The trick is to remember its just a bit of fun or a place to let off steam.

Its getting tense on here at the moment, a sign that nerves are setting in over our performances and prospects....3 wins on the bounce all is sweetness and light again.

Not sure that's right this season. A lot of us have been pretty unsatisfied with lucky 1-0 wins.

Derogatory in your eyes only. I am one of those professions. Do you really expect me to quote all the non-football managerial jobs to get my point across?
