Look at the replays that is not the case. It was almost cynical.

He's just not very bright. Anything that can be done by pure instinct he has a chance, anything beyond that? At the mercy of the opponent.

If you think Arsenal still have any chance it shows major delusion!! You may as well concede the tie now!!

What was Chez supposed to do? He was in a no win situation, if he stayed on his line, they would score, if he comes off his line, then there's always the chance he'll bring down the opposition player.

He either gets out as soon as he sees Roben break or having seen he's late at least not clip him when it's hopeless. If you see the replay he very cynically clipped him when he could have avoided him. That was early in the game. It wasn't some heroics at the end of the game.

A smart keeper won't let his team with a man down against the best side in the world half way into the first period.

I mean great keepers like Cech have gone almost their whole career without ever bringing the last man down. Is that a coincidence? Are they intelligent keepers or just incredibly lucky?

Are keepers who judge the timing of when to come out of the box intelligent or incredibly lucky?

My thread is based on my experience with the views of most fans here which consider Szczesny to be among the top keepers in the world. Which to me is absolutely laughable. We now have the best CB pairing since a decade probably and he still has a way worse Goals conceded record per game than Almunia (who had some of the worst defenses in club history ahead of him).

He has 100+ apps now, this isn't some random fluke. He has a history now. Only area of his game that has improved is he is better at defending corners. Everything else can be attributed to Mertesacker and Koscielny.

Szcz is just as good at shotstopping as always. Just as bad at everything else as always.

He'll be decent against most sides (most top-half table GKs would) and you won't be able to rely on him when it matters. He's not even top 5 in the league IMO, he is way overrated here.

As an outsider I believe Szezney (excuse the spelling) wi bee a great keeper for you lot in the future. At the moment he is a great shot stopper but can be a bit over enthusiastic and therefore naive and give away petty penalties I feel, as proven tonight and on other occasions, especially against Greece in the Euro's. However I reckon he will easily step up to the plate for you in the future and be the man between the sticks you've lacked since Seaman/Lehmann, and is an essential cog to the Arsenal building block for the next few years at least.

I see absolutely no difference between what Chesney did and what Fabianski did against Sturridge on Sunday, apart from the fact that Fabianski got the ball and was praised as being a brilliant goalkeeper who we shouldn't be letting leave the club whereas Ches didn't get the ball and is being called a failure.

It's like football fans have no sense of bias sometimes.

I personally think that Lennon, with his crazy jazz hands, might make a good keeper!

As for the pen last night. Meh, it happens, Chezzers had to force him wide. So what if he clipped him? Robben is one of the fastest players out there and he's drawn countless fouls and penalties over the years through his pace and skill. IMO we've a great young keeper. He's not infallible but he's got all the attributes to be the best and time on his side to iron out the errors in his game.

Surely getting or not getting the ball is the whole point? If Giroud swings his leg like Henry, but Giroud misses it completely and Henry puts it in the corner of the net - you will say it's the same thing?

Like I said last night. As good as Sczezney is, after watching Neuer its clear to see he's not at the TOP level.

The German is just a different class.

Giroud has struck a ball like Henry at times, and Henry has struck a ball like Giroud at times. The result colours people's perception ... if someone takes a shot from 25 yards out and skies it into the crowd, it was stupid. If he takes the same shot and puts it in the corner, he's a genius.

Nobody can blame Chesney for coming out. It was the right decision. He didn't get it and he got sent off, but it could just as easily have gone the other way and been a brilliant bit of keeping ... like everyone praised Fabianski for when he did exactly the same thing on Sturridge.

    This ^

The margins at the top level of football are so fine, a split second earlier off of his line from Szczesny or a split second slower from Robben and we'd be talking about a world class stop instead of a red card that killed the game.

I don't like seeing these threads slating our players and looking for scapegoats after a loss either.
