News today that Wayne Rooney has agreed a £70 million contract ( £300,000 A WEEK ). This really is getting out of hand as the average working man has to graft 15 years to earn his weekly wage. To me this is immoral, especially for someone who isn't the best footballer in the world, nor do I think the best in England. It smacks of absolute desperation by Manure and I can only hope their working class supporters, not the prawn sandwich brigade, let the club know in no uncertain terms what they think.

What must Messi earn or Ronaldo ?

As long as we mugs pay to go and watch these 'superstars' kick a ball around for 90 mins at the weekend their wages will increase.

It's absolutely disgusting really considering that one of the greatest players this country has ever produced (and one of the most loyal I may add) passed away this weekend. Tom Finney was on peanuts compared to these mercenaries and played the game because he loved it.

It's a bit of an insult to the working class guys that pay their hard earned money to go through the gates.

he's been angling for this, for weeks now, (his agents that is)
it's the agents that are the leeches of football, the footballers are just to thick to see it

He gets paid in a week what it takes Pardew about 5 years to earn.

It all goes to show how far out of reach the top clubs are getting. Rooney isn't even at the very top anymore (if he ever was). What hope do we have of attracting top players when we would not be able to afford a quarter of his wages?

£300,000 if you worked 40 years = £144 a week or £625 a month. We can all earn that man. It was a bit tongue in cheek, as I'm sure Pardew gets paid plenty - otherwise he'd walk to another Premiership club - after all his CV is pretty good, in keeping a team top half of the league who buy nobody ...

Rooney isn't worth that kind of money mind! I think we will end up disappointed again this summer when he wilts in the Brazilian heat having had a hard season carrying Man U's hopes.

That is true but only in a roundabout way the money taken at the gate would not even pay the players wages

Never quite understand these threads. Does anyone get bent out of shape about what Tom Cruise makes for 6 weeks work acting (badly) in Mission Impossible 47 ? Or what Beyoncé makes for having a decent voice and better than average butt ? Far more than Rooney, who grafts reasonably hard 49 weeks a year and is a far better footballer than Tom Cruise is an actor.

Football is part of the entertainment industry. The amount any person can make in the entertainment industry is a factor of how many bums they can get on seats, or how many people they can get to turn on the telly.

Fredd, Unfortunately the bums on seats mostly belong to hard working class people who have to struggle to pay for a match day out. You can guarantee that other players will want more and I'll guarantee season ticket prices will rise towards the cost. I predict we'll see more and more of the 16,000 size crowd the Mackems attracted at other grounds as the working man is being priced out of the grounds.

Football takes no money out the public purse and generates its own income.
There is i am guessing 500m men playing regular football in the world today. All would love to be a pro. Rooney is in the top 0.0001% or whatever of these footballers. Hence he gets the big bucks. Has a track record of delivering trophies in a top team. Scores plenty goals and will probably end up Englands top ever scorer.
    £300k a week, Market forces.
The only way it will stop is if we stop going or subscribing to watch games. Top premier league games are cheaper than a top concert and comparable to seeing a movie.
