Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill is challenging his team to climb the League One table.

Bristol City boss Steve Cotterill is challenging his players to break into League One's top ten.

Currently up to 17th in the table following Tuesday's 3-1 win at Leyton Orient, the Robins have spent much of the season lodged in the bottom four battling relegation.

But a follow-up victory over Tranmere Rovers at Ashton Gate on Saturday could see Steve Cotterill's team rise as high as 14th, providing results elsewhere go their way.

Certainly, City's manager is looking up rather than down and he is eager to incentivise his players ahead of a game he describes as "our biggest of the season."

He said: "If we can win on Saturday, we can take ourselves up to 14th place.

"Once we get to 14th place, we must then see if we can focus on the top ten.

    "After that, who knows?"

Having seen off Orient in midweek, the Robins are seeking to achieve back-to-back league wins for only the second time this season.

But Cotterill is urging his players not to fall prey to complacency and he warned: "We must be confident, not arrogant."

He added: "“I’ve tried to bring them all down quickly. They can enjoy the result from the other night and take confidence from the way they played, but it’s back to work now and they have to make sure they are focussed on Tranmere.

“If they are not fully focussed, then it will become a dangerous game. Tranmere are dangerous, they went to MK Dons and won the other week and it is certainly not going to be a walk in the park.

“Beating Leyton Orient the other night was great, but that was the other night.

“We need to focus on what is coming up next and make sure we play to our full potential. If we do that, then I’m confident we will give ourselves a good chance of winning the match.”

I read it as setting targets, unlike last season when someone said I don't look at the table. I think he's playing with the BBC predictor but one game at a time. Nothing wrong with challenging them with a top 10 place. After all we are only 7 points off with 15 games to go. So 3 in 15 positive games where other results go our way is not impossible.

I'm not saying it will happen, but I much prefer him setting goals than just saying I'm not looking at the table.

I agree with the confident and arrogant statement as there is a fine line.

i agree with him. Get ourself 14th and then forget about the relegation fight. Could do the players good. Having a positive goal of top 10 rather than a negative one of surviving. Ofcourse lose tomorrow and its back to square 1. All this is better than the ****e SOD come out with though!

Only lost 3 league games in our last 11 and those were against Wolves and Brentford away and Coventry, who without there deduction would of been in the play offs. So we've only lost really to promotion chasing teams. Yes we may be playing crap but we're getting results. Which is different than playing crap and not getting results under SOD

But the way SC is putting it to the players AND THE SUPPORTERS means that he wants them to look up the table and not downwards.
It is all about the glass being half full or half empty!
As others have reminded us, the miserable SOD just tried to be clever. Everyone in football looks at the table because if you do not, then you forget the purpose of playing in a league.

Questionable commitment, tactical naivety and unprofessional should be unacceptable regardless of opposition.

The last trip to London saw fans being justifiably critical of Mr Cotterill and that team non performance.Tuesday was a good performance. kamikaze keeper helped, but the team appeared motivated and the team seemingly understood roles. That should be normal again regardless of whoever is lining up against them.

Thieves for taking fans money. The Brentford Ole ole ole game was humiliating if you think the the we is part of we're.

Don't see what a previous Coach has to do with it. Same for any, if the team plays **** and are not up for it regularly expect to get relegated. That has been BCFC under Cotterill.

Time to shut up and show week in week out the players are behind him and when that is done the fans will follow.

I was comparing results under Cotts and SOD. It's only a game of football. Don't let it take over your life ffs <doh> If you're moaning about the club taking your money then don't go.

Says the bloke who says not 606 is part of his life.

I went to Brentford because of who goes. Any game in London puts a few more hundred fans on the gate and because they are normally more of a laugh. i will do a few more because they are fun to be at not because its my life.

I do think that any manager should be able to send out a City team that doesn't get the piss taken out of it against a Brentford. I do think that a manager also should be a able to get a team to put two periods of forty five minutes of effort together more that Cotterill has. Its bullshitting of the highest when pros can't even take free kicks and keep them on the pitch.

I go on Not606 every day, so I guess by default it would be part of my life?
I support City through thick and thin (or thin and thinner!), but compared to the health of my family then it's not important (as Shiny said ultimately it's just a game).
Back to the thread - it's good to have a manger who is positive - I've been saying on here that things are better under SC - it's also better for the players to be looking up rather than down, especailly for confidence.
Get down the Gate on Saturday and get behind the lads!!

I think it's a clever idea, personally. For the past few years our aim has been avoiding the bottom of the table, so it's no wonder that we've played like a relegation threatened team for so long.

Now that we've got a win, I think that persuading the team that, if they try hard, a top ten finish is achievable, we could go on and get somewhere near there. Even if we're 15th I think a lot of fans will be happy after how this season has gone.

If the players can at least believe that they can get near the top ten, I think we'll be a lot happier, and if we finish around there it will help us look towards a push for promotion next year.

I remember last year when Yeovil were just below halfway - on Radio Bristol/Somerset GJ was talking about the play-offs when they were nearer relegation - look what happened to them!!!

When have I ever said not606 is part of my life? In a thread about emigrating but 15000 post says it all. Lot of posts about something that is just a game to you.
Brentford like a game v Watford or Millwall is a day in London with mates on the train and a game. City win lose its a laugh. Generally you know what to expect. Expecting effort is a not a big ask.

First away at Brentford would been around 84, it was 2-0 and an eventful day. Been there what feels like scores of times since and seen all sorts including a 3-0 duffing. This season was the worst at griffin Park, which is saying something v some of the teams City have had in that time. It did not compare to anything else this season and it should not be expected or looked upon as one of those days. Clearly something was wrong with team and manager.

Days ago he was tellin the dumb beasts didn’t know his best midfield, or have a midfield now he is the special one … This Cotterill is going to be have to be watched with right type of eyes.

    Stop the guff …

    "Sorry boys I fckd up.
That AND that AND that one AND really that ONE ain’t good enough.
More like that I ask for the p45, give my money to charidee and clean the Eastend crapper with my toothbrush.
THAT not THAT is what I intend to do now".

    Clear as day.
