I can tell you exactly why. Ferguson is so arrogant and pig headed that he couldnt possibly allow somebody to come in after him who might do just as well or perhaps an even better job. He needed someone to come in after him who would struggle and in the process only enhance the Ferguson legend, that's why he recommended someone like Moyes when Mourinho would literally have been perfect for the job in every other sense. And of course Utd had to follow his recommendation.
You know what's interesting is that if MU would have gotten Mourinho I think they would have also gotten Modric.
I don't blame Moyes for today really. He needs to be able to buy a new defence in the summer. Ferguson left him with ageing and now error prone central defenders - Vidic is nowhere near the rock he used to be and Ferdinand might as well live in a nursing home. Smalling is mostly **** and Jones I prefer as a holding midfielder. Rafael has really gone downhill after his potential a year or two ago and Evra is on his last legs on the left. Fellaini is Moyes' mistake, for me, but the rest he inherited. Mata is a good buy but they need a full restructuring, and importantly a completely new defence. I'd say our back four is stronger than Man Utd. Put our back line in their squad and they'd be closer to the top 4.
Just been on the Manyoo board and one resident has popped up a player analysis. Next to Smalling it just says "should be in League 1". bit optimistic.
They should have gone all out to sign Hummels. Fact is they won 't be able to attract the top larkers now because all the big boys want to play in the Champions League. Manure will be lucky to make the Europa League. The downward spiral has begun. Brilliant.
I have been thinking the same thing for a while, it's actually amazing how much this parallels Liverpool when Dalglish left the first time.
The biggest names, sure, but they can still strengthen their defence with players outside the top 6. Right Back: Clyne, Chambers, Rosenior, Coleman* Centre Back: Davies, Caulker, Jagielka*, Vlaar, Reid, Bassong Left Back: Baines*, Shaw * Everton are a few points above them now but Man Utd are the bigger club with more long-term potential. This season is a blip for them while rebuilding. And those are just players in the premier league already who'd do a decent job for them but they probably won't look at most. Man Utd will still be able to attract players from Europe without the Champions League, just not the biggest names until they're back in it.
Moyes has made two big money signings so far. One is **** and the other they didn't really need as the money should have been spent elsewhere. I look forward to seeing who he recruits in the summer.
I'd honestly rather have any of those centre backs than Vidic and Ferdinand who're past it, sloppy and leaking goals any time I've seen them play. Likewise their only right back is Rafael who is error-prone and the four mentioned have all been in better form this season. Not saying they're the best options to go for, but even as a worst case there are players in the league performing better than their current defence. Make up a back four out of that list and they'd have a stronger back line than they're having to use this season. Still not on par with Chelsea, for instance, but right now their defence isn't much better than Cardiff or Fulham. I expect they'll still bring in a couple of bigger names from abroad.
