Newcastle are among the clubs reportedly tracking Metz striker Diafra Sakho.

The 24-year-old is the top scorer in Ligue 2 this season and has been watched by up to 15 scouts in some games.

His 12 goals in 21 games have put his side in contention for promotion to Ligue 1 in what has been a breakthrough season for the late-blooming forward.

Metz academy chief Denis Schaeffer told Inside Futbol: “Every game, there are around 15 international clubs who come to the matches to see him. English clubs are here.

“I’m happy he’ll stay until the end of the season. Then it will be difficult for us to keep him.

“I hope his future will be at a very important club, like [former Metz academy product] Papiss Cisse, who plays now at Newcastle.”

Schaeffer says a loan spell at lowly Boulogne was the making of Sakho.

He added: “He was not ready at 20.

“Our president wasn’t sure. We said we need to work with him one year more.

“After one year we loaned him to a third division club. Now he’s a very good striker for the future. Without him the team is not the same and he wants to stay and help us.”

Sounds like another case of - he's french, there's interest from England, let's add Newcastle's name to the mix...

None of these rumours come from the club and as BRS has said they are virtually always wrong. I haven't heard of this lad, but even if we are interested I don't see that he could be bought as a first 11 player. Coming from the French 2nd division is a massive step below premier league football. That's not to say he couldn't make it, but a player like this would need to be bought as a squad player, alongside some proven goalscorers.

The rumours linking us to forwards will be non stop over the coming months cos of the situation in the summer. They'll need to be taken with a lot more than a pinch of salt IMO.

If he's going to cost more than peanuts, you can rule Newcastle out.

Not good enough for us, I'd prefer someone established in case he turns out to fire blanks.

A 1 in 2 record in a very weak league is not enough to be attracting our attention, if the scouts see something extra in him fair enough but nothing really exciting for someone who's 24.

If he's not been picked up by a bigger club at this stage then he's probably just another Amalfitano.
