The fake festival names are class. A few of my mates play in the kings of Lyon.

    Other bands are

    Four fighters
    Coldplace
    Really hot chili peppers
    The fillers
    Stereotonics
    Kazabian

All very good and well worth seeing this summer.

I saw two bands called on a double bill in a London Pub called Jo Ran Jo Ran and Spandex Ballot...I hated the music but had to laugh at the band names.

This is no joke and I'm not being deliberately controversial or anything but I have NEVER understood the appeal of a tribute band. What is it that you're meant to get from them? Seriously, someone who goes to see tribute bands - what is it that you're hoping for? I just dont see the appeal.

The amount of times Ive heard people say "ooo theyre just as good / better than the real thing." NO - it doesnt work like that. The skill is ****ing writing the songs in the first place. Take the Clone Roses for example, it's hardly ****ing difficult to have a better singing voice than Ian Brown is it? To me it's the same as when I was in the Vegas hellhole and I heard some fat ****ing Yanks say at the Venetian "gee this is amazing, we dont need to go to Venice now". NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Building a ****ing concrete trench in the middle of a hotel complex and filling it with water whilst having blokes in stripes tops riding gondolas DOES NOT make it the same as Venice you ignorant ****s.

Bum chinned, I can kind of see your point. Its still nice though if one you like the songs of a certain band, and two if you like live music.

IMO music is better live and even if it is a tribute it still makes for a great night.

I presume you don't see the point on covers bands either?

Do you mean a band who rely purely on making cover versions? I cant think of any off the top of my head, other than Undercover.

Well it depends if they're trying to sound exactly like the original - as a tribute band does - then no I dont see the point. But a band who covers a song and makes it their own, then yes I do see the point. Two of my favourite ever songs - Johnny Cash's Hurt and Sinead O'Connors Nothing Compares 2U - are covers.

What's that got to do with it? Are you suggesting someone who can strum a guitar following sheet music is as talented as the person who wrote it?

In that case, after reading Newton's third law that makes me every bit as good as him.

Did I suggest anything? I asked you a question. Given that you side stepped it, I going to presume you don't play an instrument. Because if you did, you'd know that to be proficient on any instrument in any band takes a certain level of skill. Whether that be to the standard of playing in your local pub or playing at Wembley in the biggest band in the world. Songwriting is a different skill altogether and clearly if everyone was capable of writing 'Bohemian Rhapsody' then there would be no need for this discussion.

I didnt side step it and yes I can play instruments. This isnt a thread about BCC's musical skills.

And with the line in bold you made my point. I dont see the need for tribute bands.

Just to clarify BCC, you are right in saying that I didn't start this thread with the intention of sneakily gaining knowledge of your historical musical instrument engagement.

However I didn't start it as a discussion point for the merits of tribute bands. Give me a good tribute band name or I'll kick off!!!

    Care to elaborate?

I'd say, using 'Bohemian Rhapsody' as our example, is proof enough that there obviously is a need for tribute bands and a market for them. How many Queen fans can go and see them play live? Certainly the original line up anyway. Correct, none. So believe or not people actually enjoy going to see bands paying tribute to other bands.

To a certain extent I do take your point though. I wouldn't go and see a tribute to the Arctic Monkeys or The Killers as I could go and see the real thing. So whats the point? But say, Thin Lizzy or Led Zeppelin, a band that you'll never see live again. Why not?
