News broke on Thursday afternoon that United had suspended their U21 coach Willie Donachie with immediate effect.

No reason has been given for the move, but it follows unconfirmed reports of an incident in the Newcastle dressing room following Monday's reserve derby loss.

The Magpies second string currently languish 20th in the 22 team U21 Premier League, with just 13 points from their 13 games and the leakiest defence in the league.

This is not the sort of news we need to be hearing after such a turbulent wek. Sometimes, as a club, we have an amazing ability to self destruct <doh>

...or is this a positive sign that Mike Ashley is no longer willing to tolerate under performing members of staff and he has decided the time has come to start making changes?

If he's clouted a youngster he's got to be out the door I think. More turmoil <doh>

Let's face it, he's not the first coach to whack a player, didn't Howard Wilkinson wallop Cantona, not to mention John Carver having fights with certain players when Bobby was manager.

He's far from the first, but the fact that it wasn't a first team player, but a teenager in the under 21's will go against him. For all we know the kid could have been mouthing off and fully deserved it by old school rules, but old school rules aren't allowed anymore.

If it is Streete that's not the road to be going down, I'd me more inclined to pursue a different avenue.

Can't we have him replace Pardew as first team manager?

He'd have had his work cut out last Saturday!

As long as it doesn't lead to a dead end, it's no one's asphalt...

If it helps curb poor behaviour then it just draws a yellow line under the matter. One Way or another.

See he's now resigned. Won't be a great loss seeing as they hardly ever win a game.

That's true, just wonder what Streete did to provoke him?

The latest on the story from NUFC.com

Update: Newcastle United confirmed on Thursday evening that Willie Donachie had resigned his post at the club.

News broke on Thursday that United had suspended their U21 coach Willie Donachie with immediate effect. The move follows reports of an incident in the Newcastle dressing room following Monday's reserve derby loss.

It's claimed that Donachie and central defender Remi Streete were involved in an altercation broken up by other United players. A tackle by Streete led to the award of a penalty from which the mackems scored.

The Magpies second string currently languish 20th in the 22 team U21 Premier League, with just 13 points from their 13 games and the leakiest defence in the league.

62 year-old Glaswegian Donachie was recruited by United for their Academy coaching staff in 2009, having worked as Joe Royle's assistant at various clubs. He also had a spell in charge of Millwall.

That following a playing career at full back for Manchester City (facing United in the 1976 League Cup Final), Norwich City, Burnley, Oldham Athletic and Scotland.

While playing no active part in coaching United's first team, Donachie has a regular duty at first team home fixtures watching from a seat in the Milburn Stand and passing on his observations to Alan Pardew & Co.
