Newcastle United are taking a battering on Thursday after the Newcastle Chronicle published a story about how the Magpies have revoked a disabled gran’s season ticket.

65-year-old Lilian Held, who is disabled, has been sent a letter by Newcastle telling her that her season ticket as been revoked after she gave her ticket to her 29-year-old son.

Mrs. Held, who lives a 10-minute walk from St James’ Park, was on holiday on December 14th, 2013, when Newcastle hosted Southampton in the Premier League, and the senior citizen needed an adult to accompany her 14-year-old twin granddaughters to the match.

Her son Chris stepped up to act as chaperone, however 20 minutes into the game he was evicted from the ground leaving the two teenage girls behind, after security checked his season ticket and saw that the names did not match. Moreover, Newcastle’s security took possession of the season ticker saying they’d only return to it’s rightful owner.

On her return to Newcastle, Mrs. Held went to the ground to retrieve her ticket only to find out that it has been terminated. She told the Chronicle:

I told them he never sits in the seat – I always sit in the seat and this was the first game I’d missed in 14 years. I only wanted the girls to be accompanied by an adult because I’m always there at home games to look after them.

I have sat in that seat for 13 year. I’m a lifelong fan of Newcastle United and I worked for the club in the 1990s where I had my picture taken with Kevin Keegan.

Going to the match is the only bit of social time I get. I live for those home games. Taking my ticket from me and selling my seat without giving me the right to even argue my case has completely ruined my year.

What a disgrace, the powers that be need to think this over again and put right the wrong that they've done.

They've acted like bullying thugs against a disabled OAP and it just isn't good enough.

They should give the lady concerned a complimentary ticket for the disappointment they've caused.

Am I the only one to take this with a pinch of salt ?

Her son used her season ticket once and once only to protect the poor wee lasses from the ways of the wicked world (and definitely wasn't habitually using his mother's discounted season ticket so as to avoid having to pay full price for one, as he/she have now been asked to do by the club). Possible of course.

Embarrassing the people at Newcastle United, sure do know how to treat people like **** at times. Let's hope common sense eventually prevails.

From what I saw on another site, someone who knows the person involved said she wasn't giving all the facts. Doesn't surprise you with newspaper reports.

So she wasn't giving her all for the club? Maybe the hierarchy should look closer to home

The more and more I hear about the club I love at the moment, the more contempt I'm starting to have for it.

There's only one word best for describing the way it's being run and that is PATHETIC.

Quite frankly she can take some solace that in a twisted way they are showing some compassion – you needn't waste your time setting foot in the place from now until the end of the season.

I'm almost certain it'll be a thankless task for most as we limp our way meekly to just over the 40 point barrier, taking some heavy and embarrassing beatings along the way.

It's NUFC's loss in more ways than one!

I see on the Chronicle website a number of disabled supporters who have concessionary tickets have given support to the club over their action.

Reading both sides of the story, along with some of the comments from other disabled fans it seems like the club hasn't behaved anywhere near as badly as it first looked. Looks like they tried to avoid paying the subsidy and got caught.

I think there's been wrong on both sides to be honest.

By and large though I think there's a chance for the club to behave more sensitively, rather than leaping on an offense with the harshest punishment.

The loyalty of a long-standing (no pun intended) supporter should count for something here. Seems very petty and feeds beautifully into a tidal wave of negative PR...

Agree completely with this. It was a situation that didn't need to escalate like it has - with blame for that on both sides.
