Tiss himself said that he would have had to be fitter to play now. I'm not sure he could play in our present team without severe work from both him and the coaches...there is no room for anyone not on the ball for 90+ minutes. I bet Matty could do it, but he'd hate it
I'm not wrong at all. You don't understand how statical ratings work do you? The players with the highest rating generally are the ones that have the biggest influence on the game. You can either build your score throughout the game or do it with a few moments of brilliance. You look at a player like Ozil that doesn't put in much of a shift defensively but he gets high scores statistically. Key moments bump up your rating a lot. If you don't understand how something works then don't argue about it.
Back in days before we had stats for everything someone came up with the idea of Fantasy Football. I think I'm right in saying that Tiss was the leading points scorer in 3 out of the first 4 years. That must say something about his contribution. It always made me laugh when people called him inconsistent. Maybe he would go missing for a period of time during a game but those figures prove that he would still pop up with goals and assists more often than anyone else.
All well and good, but who decides what 'score' is given for a completed pass, or a goal, or a short on target. It is all relative. What statistics cover up in this instance is that a player can play 'poorly' yet have a decent rating. One could argue if the decent rating is gained by tapping the ball in for the winner from a yard out then that is job done and justified. I believe the theme for some people's view is that statistics are a useful tool, but not the be all and end all in terms of player performance. Use them carefully. I have lived through a few governments that can make the world feel like utopia with the presentation of a few statistics.
LFF, you didn't need Fantasy Football scores to see that! Any player who scored 20-25 goals for several seasons in a poor, relegation threatened team, was something special.... but I feel that may drift of on to another topic.
I wonder what a supremely fit, modern-day Tiss would be like. I'm convinced he'd be up there with the Messi's of this world. To be fair, he was quite athletic when he started out although I still have my "Lazy but talented" T-shirt.
That's my T-shirt!!! Paul Gascoigne, Glen Hoddle, Matt Le Tissier. The three most talented footballers of my era and England didn't get the best of any of them. One mis-used himself, one got mis-used by England and the other didn't get used enough!
I'd agree with those, and add Rodney Marsh and Robin Friday. Astonishing that Marsh only got capped 9 times, and of course Friday wouldn't have been touched with a barge pole by the FA.
It was supposed to be the end of last year but I can't find any reference that it has. There were rumours that Russell Brand was going to play him, which would somehow be appropriate. Agree about Stan Bowles too.
Indeed, for his first 4 or 5 seasons he was quite the skinny waif. Then he filled out a bit, but it was only in his latter years that he was definitely over an ideal playing weight. Someone else mentioned on this forum this evening, Charlie Adams plays overweight. Nobody bats an eyelid, yet he doesn't have a 10th of Matt's ability.
Matty put on weight and made little effort to be fit, because he could and still play fantastic football. However, these days are different and he said himself that he would have to be fitter now, so he would be.
