Tony Hateley has died aged 72. One of the first big name strikers I remember well. He went to so many clubs in his career that at one time he held the record for accumulated transfer fees. Cost LFC about 98k when we bought him in the late sixties. Big money at the time, but now a weekly wage to a lot of prem. clubs. Younger fans probably remember his son, Mark, England & Rangers striker.
Yes, I remember my dad saying Shankly was mad to buy him - then he scored 20 goals and my dad said Shanks was mad to sell him! Same argument as Carroll, as I remember, and style of play and so forth, but in those days EVERY English team haa big centre-forward, and I think we had Toshack lined up. But Hateley did what he did and did it well. RIP.
