Better. Although it doesn't change the overall nature of the chant....

    pourquoi?

It's actually "laughs longest" but apparently it's time to stop.

I knew he bought into the rivalry thing, and there's no doubt that he became [and is] a genuine Saints fan, but I didn't know he went the whole nine yards.

I think his experience with Pompey in the Champ was at best finding them a bit unprofessional, they were lurching into chaos at the time. Then there was that nasty spat with the local News guy as well which left a bad taste, his version of events at the St Marys game that season was a classic over the top bitter rant. The Don would not be amused I'm guessing.

I'm in favour of retaining the odd anti Pompey/rivalry song but something new would be nice which reflects more the current difference in status, and catchy, and suits my manly baritone, and which only has one verse 'cos I forget the words easily.

It's a chant that is based essentially on celebrating the misfortune and mismanagement of another (in this case Portsmouth FC) but also in a particularly aggressive way. Whether you use heck or ****, the principal is basically the same.

That's a bit much...celebrating the misfortune and mismanagement of another is an unremarkable and often fundamental feature of rivalry. There's nothing terribly aggressive about suggesting that one is laughing at a rival, even if it includes a naughty word.

Maybe it's just the way those cocktwats on the Portsmouth News use it.

You've convinced me, it's definitely just banter. I'm going to join in at the next game. But without swearing.

I have minor little laughs at Pompey (it's like a reflex), but it is now like kicking someone when they are down. I'm sure there are plenty of fans who deserve it and would do it back, but there are many who are human and doth bleed like us (or so I have heard).

Well in that case I am a naughty boy and need to sit on the naughty step. Oh no, I like a chant that mocks my rivals (without talking about shooting them). Football fans have always enjoyed chanting about the misfortune of other clubs, be it their match day opposition or local rivals. I don't like some of the songs but if you find that one offensive then you need to grow a pair (oops is that also politically incorrect these days?).

Just cuddle up to your blanket with your fingers in your ears and the nasty noise will soon go away.

I'm going to start singing "Away in a manger next week"

Not that infrequent, nearly every home game, audible from the Northam anyway.

    This is comical.

I swear, every single thread is just about moaning and giving someone a ticking off

One minute fans cant sing, the next they dont sing enough.

One minute a song is slated, the next it is adored.

Having a bit of banter and singing pompey songs during the game is simply that... banter. They are our rivals and if people wish to sing these then so be it. If others dont, then sing up and sing another song or sit in the chapel and shhhhh ;) Each to there own basically

Always such a happy board to read and be a part off here :):):)

Well like I said, it's probably the way it's said on the Portsmouth News as honestly I've never been to St Mary's. On the News at least, it's just said with such vitriolic venom by certain posters. But hey, I don't mind a bit of banter directed at Portsmouth. Call us inbreds or whatever, why not!

Would have no idea what's going on in the world of Portsmouth without it! And it's always entertaining to read comments from Pompey fans after yet another defeat.

    I'll summarise:
    Traffic still rubbish
    Trains still not running
    MP still a bit creepy
The usual assortment of minor crime
Your latest manager thinks your latest players were unfortunate in their latest defeat
    It's raining
    etc

Good post. Its a football match, and singing these daft banterisms is part of it for many people. Nothing more.
