Head shaved at Barbers shop next to regent cinema in Hull 69, army boots from Army and navy store at a quid a pair from mountain of boots in shop. Barber reckoned me n Jacko was the 5th n 6th who he had given the skinhead shave to . We had seen article in one of the morning papers about the new cult called skinheads . Mother went nuts when I went home... In next to know time there was hundreds of skinheads all dancing to Desmond Dekker and Prince buster. Now I sit and listen to judge dread singing where have all the skinheads gone. :-( I get cnut trying to flog me the BNP newspaper in Scarborough ...Had to tell one fat bone head he wasn't a skinhead. Cnut didn't even know who symarip are . Cheeky twat had a bloody skinhead patch on his jacket. ****ing ****er. Funny really he thought I was BNP till I shoved him over his table full of BNP **** much to the amusement if the anti BNP stall opposite . I'm sure I saw fat Monte in the east stand wearing a crombie a couple of months back. Bloody suede head.. Right now where did I put my ox blood polish .
Ps....I had a brolly took off me as end was pointed.. Still got some skinners bought from masons in Hull. Infact iv still got my white bib and brace in the loft, clockwork orange style Shoes IF worn are brouges .
I concur. It's highly unlikely a BNP activist would be dressed as a skinhead, sporting a skinhead badge.
Filey you admit the Skinheads evolved in to Suedes and Brollies yet remain puritanical about the original skins and their liberal dance stance. You should realise youth cultures evolve and change and from my experience most later skins and mods I knew during the two tone explosion sympathised with the NF and embraced Sham 69 and oi! Where have all the bootboys gone was by Slaughter and the Dogs btw.
It was stan smiths barbers and he's still there. Saw a sprinkling of oldschool skinheads walking around southend town centre last Saturday. Fat blokes, bald heads, Harringtons, even a couple of sheepskins, levis, turn ups, ben shermans, braces, cherry red DM's. Skinhead movement died out in Hull, as quickly as it arrived circ 1970/71, height being the summer of 70. Ring leaders persecuted by the OB, many locked up, others constantly getting their collars felt on a weekly basis. The football crowd were decimated in 1972 after a trumped up court case. After time in a cell and the OB always on your back the more acceptable suede head look overtook the skinhead look. It was never about racism. It was a working class youth fashion movement. The gang culture was there as was the loyalty to your football club/city/area. My first memory was on the OPE/NHE estate. Also seeing visiting boot boys at City. Which we copied. One of the original OPE lads is 60 now. Very respectable, which I suppose he always was. Not all the original skinheads were psycho's. In fact very few were. And people forget that we were all very young impressionable working class lads. I say working class because we all worked. I did feel persecuted by the OB, perhaps some of it was our own fault because we all went about in gangs dressed identically, how naïve were we? I still think the OB all over the country make a good living today out of the myth and folk lore that surrounds those days especially at football. Of all the old faces I still see at football, and its not that many because there's not a lot left, none are involved in violence and none go looking for trouble and I still look back on those days as a fashion that got out of hand and probably hijacked. It left an impression on me and moulded the rest of my life.
Bus driver. Im from NHE.....lived on OPE for a time. Had a few bits of bovver from the OPE reds at times
Thats were your wrong..he had his skinhead sew on patch on the arm of his olive green flight jacket.. In my case had scooter patches on mine and various skinhead reggae / Trojan patches. Any way ....racists are ****ers...so are boneheads
I'm from NHE 33rd Ave. Joined up aged 15 1/2.My going away clothes, Red Harrington, Ben Sherman shirt, Prmce of Wales check trousers, brogues. I never went full on skin, suede head for me. I just loved girls with part suede hair.
great read love hearing about the old bootboy days that were just before my time btw folks CI is back open if you didnt know
Cheers for the "shoutout" Ren, as I believe the kids say these days, "big up yourself" too. I'm slightly bemused you think we don't moan about the mods (well 2 of them, Ricardo's a decent fella) on here and that we take their **** quietly. Overall though, a fair assessment. I'm still Happy, and will always be a Tiger. Don't be a stranger!
------ We both went to green huts as well Mel.. From 21st ave we went on OPE....I use to spray HULL CITY on the OPE wall that was covered in MUFC stuff ( underpass wall ) Then moved onto the quadrant before leaving Hull. I go to my sisters on 21st ave before every home game. My wardrobe is full of Ben Sherman's , Harrington's etc. Bumped into an old mate in Hull not long ago I didn't recognise him in trousers and suite type jacket and silly hair cut. He recognized me as I still had the some gear on I wore 40 odd years ago...I told him I still went to City but he seemed to have grown out of going....sad git...said his wife stopped him going ! He had even sold his scooter and bought a car ( family reasons he said )
That was a great post Bus driver... There's still a strong scene alive and quite a few younger ones following in the footsteps of the originals....lots on the scooter scene....Isle of wight rally august bank holidays full of them still dancing to Desmond Dekker,Jimmy Cliff ..Prince Buster and later ska stuff. I was at Castle Hill a few weeks ago and there was a Girl early 20s in red Harrington, Levis , Monkey Boots , Ben Sherman skinhead girl haircut, my female friend asked me if she was my daughter / granddaughter. All the best.
