I feel like that twat Balotelli at the moment. Yesterday's storm blew down my garden fence, right on top of a newly landscaped section of the garden. Last week our old Potterton boiler expired and the replacement cost is eye-watering and my tax bill is due for payment by Friday.

    Ces't la vie...<grr>

    Never rains eh?

Replace the fence with closeboard mate. Much more expensive but lasts a lot, lot longer.

Is it a straight boiler swap and how much are they charging? Try smaller local gas engineers as big companys like british gas mark up is insane!

Go concrete posts and feather edge
I have ... As pissed off forever repairing ours IMO

if you have a plumber mate ask him truthfully what he pays for a unit your eyes and ears will water

I heard that my plumber mates down south were buying bulk boilers in August and paying 250 each

British Gas quoted £3,400 with a discount, my local service company quoted £2,200. Problem is the gas supply has to be 22mm pipe for condenser boilers rather than the 15mm existing pipe and that's put the price up by about 25% as the meter is at the other end of the house...

Agree that concrete posts incorporated with closeboard fencing is very strong.........the only downside of concrete posts is that they can tend to crack when under duress from high winds.
Wooden posts of course rot, but you can lengthen their life considerably by coating the bottom 2' with creosote.

There is also a closeboard fencing system that uses metal posts........this is the strongest I have ever encountered. They use these alongside motorways etc.

The fence was feather edge into concrete posts, the post where the break was is now leaning about 15 degrees, probably the massive amount of rain we've had recently has loosened the soil around the base of the post as well as rotted the struts across the fence...

So the post is still intact? Sometimes it helps when the soil has a lot of give in it, as the posts will move and not always snap. It's usually the replacing of old posts that is time consuming and bumps up the cost.
Sounds like you only need the wooden parts replacing which will help to keep the cost down a bit.

Soopers - not sure if you know but there are plenty of boiler replacement schemes available that give big discounts and in some cases free supply and installation. There are certain criteria that you need to meet but we manage to get good discounts for clients / customers. Obviously i have no vested interest but we steer people to Martyn Lewis's Money Saving Expert website which have all of the details collated in one place. Might be of some help?

Thanks for the advice there Wubba but I've already checked that out and don't qualify, as usual I tried to squeeze another year out of the old one when I should've replaced it last summer.

As for the fence I was only chatting to my neighbour after the last storm a couple of weeks ago blew a section of his fence out and he, quite wisely, said leave it another month or two to see if any more storms do even more damage, he lost another section yesterday as well, so there could be a job lot of repairs in the spring.

As Goldie rightly says, Spring is on it's way...

Sorry to read about your boiler.

Have you checked out the Governments...Green Deal

You could qualify for a free boiler if you meet the criteria

    regards
