So here we go again. The last week of the transfer window - and what happens? No signings and a bid for our current star player. £14 million for Cabaye from PSG - turned down - but what figure will seal the deal? Do we have a plan if Cabaye goes or will JFK scupper it all?
Selling Carroll with no replacement was both understandable and acceptable. Firstly because the fee was ridiculously big for a relatively unproven player and secondly because such a bid was unexpected. He'd just signed a long term deal so it's understandable that the club had no immediate forward targets to try and sign. However if it happens with Cabaye (I fear it will) then it's not understandable and it's not acceptable. The reason it isn't is because we've known all window that this bid was likely to come. Both the club and the whole of the football world also know that every player at our club has their price and that Cabaye will be gone in the summer anyway. So based on that we should have replacements in mind. We should also know that from our signings last January that it take most foreign imports 6 months to settle. Knowing full well we'll get a minimum of 20m for Cabaye in the summer we should have got a Grenier, Cabella (or whoever he clubs feels will be a good replacement) signed nice and early in the window. That way if Cabaye goes we are sorted with his replacement. And if he doesn't go then we can allow the replacement a nice six month bedding in period. Frustratingly I'm almost certain Cabaye will go and no replacement will arrive until the summer. Meaning the rest of this season will fizzle out and we'll finish anywhere from 8th-12th.
Agree with this. It was likely a bid would come in, so I would like to think that the club have planned for this eventuality. Note that I said I would like to think rather than I think ...
why the feck are PSG trying to take the piss like Arsenal did by offering a derisory amount (£14m)? Ashley is one bloke you don't want to piss off. He charged the dippers £40k interest for late payment of the Mandy money. I can just see him now... 'oy PSG... every time you come to me with a bid below our value I'll add another £1m on.. now jog along and come back when you are serious'... This is the time you don't mind Mike being in charge. The bloke really is a ruthless fella.
