    Looking promising.....

Toon hope to finally land Dutch striker they offered £10m for in the summer in time for him to make his debut against Norwich next Tuesday

Luuk De Jong is on the verge of joining Newcastle in a deal worth up to £8.5million.

The Magpies are finally in the driving seat to land the Dutch striker after long-term rivals Ajax and PSV Eindhoven were priced out of the running.

The 23-year-old’s club Borussia Monchengladbach will sanction the deal when they bring in cover to replace the former FC Twente star, who has failed to settle in Germany.

The Bundesliga side wanted Toon outcast Papiss Cisse as part of a player-plus-cash deal, but the Senegal international wasn’t interested in the move.

Newcastle now hope to have De Jong signed in time to make his debut at Norwich next Tuesday. The clubs could push through a loan with a view to a permanent deal to beat the clock and ensure the transfer is successfully completed this month.

Monchengladbach want £7m for a player who cost them almost double that in summer 2012.

The rest of the deal will be made up of incentive-based add-ons, but still comes to less than the £10m Newcastle offered Twente for De Jong last summer.

The German club’s sporting director, Max Eberl, said: “Things tend to happen more towards the end of the transfer window, and we’re moving into that now.”

Hopefully things are moving along then. Possibly a loan deal until the end of the season to start with.

I'm really excited about this signing if it happens. He's big, strong and relatively mobile. He's completely different to anything we have and is pretty clinical in front of goal with either foot.

For me he's a CF. Not the quickest (he's not slow but he's not a Remy or Sissoko quick) but has very clever movement and would work well in a 4-3-3 with pace from the wide areas. He suits our currently 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 almost perfectly IMO.

The future of unsettled Borussia Monchengladbach striker Luuk De Jong remains the subject of much speculation, but he was included in the party for a week-long training camp staged during the Bundesliga's mid-season break.

The 23 year-old Dutch international featured in all but one of the four friendly matches his side played during their time in Turkey, but without ending his goal drought.

De Jong remains in contention for a place in the squad when third-placed Monchengladbach return to league action this Friday at home to leaders Bayern Munich.

However a declared intention to force his way back into the reckoning for a first team starting place during the training camp looks to have failed.

German magazine Bild noted that a quartet of forwards - Max Kruse, Branimir Hrgota, Raffael and Peniel Mlapa - are all favoured more by coach Lucien Favre and a failure to be named among the substitutes for Friday's game would see De Jong admit defeat and head for pastures new - with Newcastle heading the queue for his signature.

If he's to play against Norwich, he really should be in the Toon by now. That being the case, I'd have seen him come through the airport, followed by the press, or been told about it by my mates. I have not seen anybody matching the description of a professional football player come through, and none of my mates on security have either. Thus all speculation saying we're signing anybody thus far, is bulls***.

This saga has been running for some time, for some strange reason I expect it to happen. I should know better.

He passed through customs while you were in the broom cupboard with Canadian girl. Typical that he should pick that particular 1 1/2 minute period to walk past where you would normally be. Never mind! <ok>

On a serious note, he's a big upgrade on shola. Much quicker, can actually score, and isnt a freaking donkey. I think he would link with remy very well.

Don't think Shola is as quick as a donkey, more like a mule.

I think we have a winner for understatement of the year. To be fair I'd give Shola a new contract. Only to see BRS's head explode. :emoticon-0121-angry

The only upgrade on Shola would be God himself and even then only in his prime.

This bloody club never seems able at getting deals done. It seems that things start before the window opens with rumours, press reports, interviews with interested partes and then things drag on for ever and then, before we know it, the window closes and we're told that we couldn't get anyone over the line.

Most other clubs would have had this signed and sealed by now, the player shipped over, wife and kids installed in their new home and at the new school and still with a few weeks before the end of the transfer window there would be time for rumours of fisticuffs in local bars, local tarts deflowered and other heroic traditional footballing off the pitch antics. But bloody well not here.

Most other clubs don't have JK as DOF.
