Well...I can think of at least 3 other people sat in my office to start with. and I dare say there are many other creatives within the City who would like to give it a go. I think I'd even have a stab at it. But we are Living in a very clique city!
Another alternative and what must begin as a massive cost saving plan is to Start the footbridge from Prinny quay itself - already starting at a great height with built in lifts at one side . Im sure arrangements on Prinny quays rates could be made to fund the "rental space "taken up from losing a few dozen sparking spots . There would be a greater footfall through the shopping centre too - there is already security in place to make it less likely to attract twats (unlike the bridge on the high St)
Could a competition be arranged to all budding bridge builders in the area to submit their designs, not forgetting the costing of their suggestions, then let the experts mull over the possible alternatives to see if any of the proposals match or even surpass the designs already put forward? HDM to run the competition? Not sure if a prize to the winning design would be included other than recognition of their design.
It's crazy how long this bridge has been proposed for... I remember back when I was at uni this being talked about and I created a quick design. That was 2009! It had gold crowns either end of the bridge and had bronze lettering spelling out 'Kingston Upon Hull' on the sides of the bridge so tourists headng to/from the ferries would see it. The designs proposed by the highways agency are simply 'altered' footbridges, trying to do it on the cheap yet still appease the council.
the problem is none of the proposals give people a REASON to cross castle street , only a means to cross . At the very least if they are going to spend £3mill plus on the bridge - which is merely a simple footbridge , then give the person crossing it a view worthy of the extra effort needed to get to the old town were there is quite literally NOTHING.
you might want to try reading the local paper or looking at local tv or listening to local radio once in a while. they sometimes tell you things about hull.
It will have a view of the marina and it doesn't go to the old town, the bridge is to link the city centre with the marina and fruit market area.
Crossing Hull's Castle Street in style? Now that is a bridge too far please log in to view this image http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Cros...tory-20473565-detail/story.html#ixzz2r8niWSPE Design 4 won the vote, but the general consensus was that they were all ****... http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Cast...ll-favourite/story-20473296-detail/story.html
Gareth an Illustrator based in Hull (anyone that went to either Freedom Fest or Humber St Sesh will have seen him doing street art) has just posted this as an option on Twitter (@hesir) ; I'd say that would be brilliant - but the Highways Agency don't seem to like spending money here. Angus Young the HDM journo suggested a subway/underpass as a cheaper option, which I think could work well, as something like this: More pics: http://www.ledteklighting.co.uk/content/case_craiglinn/ LED's have the obvious links to Hull too.
so princes quay needs to be open with security in place 168 hours a week? that'll cut the costs! the princes quay buildings are opposite the west side of the marina. the footbridge needs to land at the east side.
