Defender Vergini joins Published: 20 January, 2014 by Stuart Vose Centre-back seals loan move. Sunderland AFC have signed Argentinian defender Santiago Vergini on loan until the end of the season. The 25-year old centre-back, who was on loan with Argentine Primera club Estudiantes from his Uruguayan parent club Atletico Fenix, will spend the rest of the campaign on Wearside. Vergini becomes the second arrival at the Stadium of Light this month and will wear the number 27 shirt. The centre-back began his career in Paraguay with Olimpia before playing in Europe with Italian club Verona in 2011. After a spell with Newellâs Old Boys, Vergini joined Estudiantes in 2013. He won his first cap for the Argentina national team in 2012. http://www.safc.com/news/team-news/2014/january/defender-vergini-joins
The fact he is an Argentinian might mean we have a better chance of getting this lad Scocco if he is a real target.
Haha Sunderland will pay an initial $700,000 ($100,000 of which goes to Vergini, to cover the debt Estudiantes owe him), with another $350,000 in June if they decide to make the transfer permanent and a final $150,000 if the player returns to Argentina before June 2015. If the 25-year-old does sign a permanent deal at the end of the season, then he will sign a four-year-contract until the summer of 2018.
I used to have a lot of time for Tim Vickery and his opinions of South American football and footballers. He doesn't rate Vergini at all. Obviously the man doesn't know what he's talking about.
The deal is complete so i imagine so, doubt we would though, should make his debut v the harriers i guess
Apparantly Barcelona are looking to sign him in the summer. Bloody hell, if he's good enough for Barca, he's good enough for me.
