With Man City more or less guaranteed their League Cup final place, and also (more or less) guaranteed to be in next years champions league, the question has to be asked:

Will success against Man United, and a Wembley appearance which follows, guarantee us a place in next season's Europa league even if we were to lose the final?

All the research I've done points to the same thing:
"The League Cup winners qualify for the UEFA Europa League, unless they have qualified for the Champions League through their league position, in which case the Europa League berth goes to the highest-placed team from the Premier League not already qualified for Europe."
    Seems pretty conclusive.

However...just when I'd come to accept the fact that we'd have to beat both Man Utd AND Man City to qualify for Europe, I came upon this little ray of hope.

"In October 2013, UEFA announced that from the 2015-16 season, finishing runner-up would no longer qualify teams for European Competitions should the winner otherwise qualify and instead the places in Europe would be awarded based on league position."
    FROM THE 2015-16 SEASON!!

    Can anyone offer any clarity?

yeh I've just read that quote and it appears they are only talking about the league cup (that's the one we are in under a different name).i thought though that it was only the runner up of the FA cup.??????. A little confused

I've read it again and ithink if we do get to the final we are into Europe.in the artical the FA cup is not mentioned. In the last 10 years, following restructuring of European football, and the introduction of the restructured format of the UEFA Champions League, the League Cup was threatened with losing its UEFA Cup berth for its winners. It has retained it thus far, however; England and France are the only UEFA members offering a European berth to the winners of their second cup competitions. This has allowed the League Cup to retain popularity, especially with fans of clubs for whom success in cup competitions offers their only realistic chance of qualifying for Europe.
In October 2013, UEFA announced that from the 2015-16 season, finishing runner-up would no longer qualify teams for European Competitions should the winner otherwise qualify and instead the places in Europe would be awarded based on league position.
The present holders are Swansea City who beat Bradford City 5–0 in the 2013 Final, in the Welsh club's first trip to the final.

It's frustrating not knowing. We could be 90 minutes from Europe but nobody seems to know!

If the winner of the league cup gets into Europe through their league position then the european place from the League.cup goes to 6th place in the league. Runners up dont qualify

This. Only the winners of the League Cup go into the Europa. If City won it and we were runners up, then the Europa Cup place goes to the next position in the League not the runners up in the cup.

The runners up in the FA Cup will qualify if the Winners are in the top 4 or Europa League places already.

Can you imagine if us losing the League cup final (if we get there of course anyway) enabled the dirty craas to qualify for Europe? :emoticon-0119-puke:
