Why is racism still in the game?

Hi I am currently undertaking research for my university project and would really appreciate any feedback.

I am 21 years old, and up until the past few years I'd had little experience of racism in the game. Whilst always being aware of it being a problem in the past, I thought it had been mostly eradicated. Maybe I have simply been naive growing up, or maybe it is just something that's becoming more prominent again. Over the past couple of years racism and football have been in the news regularly; Suarez and Evra, Terry and Ferdinand, Spurs fans being told to stop using the word 'Yid', racist chanting at Rio Ferdinand for dropping out of the England squad, to name a few examples.

I believe the influx of foreigners into the game may have caused resentment towards minority groups for some fans. Resentment for ruining the atmosphere at games, resentment for 'taking the game away' from the traditional white working-class fans, and resentment towardsthe so-called generation of 'armchair fans' who embarrass the 'true' supporters.

    What do you think?

Your responses may be quoted in my project, but not to worry, any responses I use will be anonymised so they can't be traced back to you.

    Cheers.

Because teams like Liverpool still refuse to tackle it and it spreads to their fans.

No, it's been backed up to death already and I can't be bothered repeating what the rest of the world has already said.

Racism is alive and well in Swansea too!

Attempts at trying to pin it on one club makes you look childish especially when your own club has it's own racist history - along with every other club - and when one of your own fans was arrested, charged and banned just a couple of weeks ago. Take the blinkers off!

I agree all teams supporters are responsible, but do you think the new influx of fans and players which have come with the introduction of the Premier League are responsible for making racism such an issue again?

    Racism has never gone away.

Spectator sports, like football, draw out the lunatic fringe who somehow feel safer in a crowd. Given the incidents you mention in your OP, were/are debatable anyway [and nobody wants to debate those particular ones again], it's hard to say that it's becoming an issue again. Players have trash-talked each other continuously over decades, so maybe it's the reporting of it that's increasing and not the actual incidents themselves.

If you really are studying the subject and this isn't a wind up, have a look at this book - European Football in Black and White: Tackling Racism in Football by Christos Kassimeris

The Suarez/Evra thing has been done to death but the part about us the supporters being racist as a whole is full of ****, as jb points out every club has them in varying amounts, but idiots like you tie the Suarez case to the supporters and that's the part of your earlier post I'm referring to.

Racism is alive and kicking everywhere, the thing no one seems to understand is that the white people are probably the most colour tolerant of all.

That is very true. First hand experience tells me that. Having a mixed race child and a Black Mrs is hard work at times. I'd never call her what she calls me for the thought of the public lynching me for racism. In her culture (Caribbean) it's just part of life, they're not so PC mad as we are over there. I don't get offended though to be honest as she's not trying to offend me - that's just motherland language.

However, I did call her a ****ing black slag once during hardcore sex ;)

One or two players if not more have a very nasty habit of playing the race card as a form of blackmail to get their way despite their severe inadequacies and shortcomings. Its despicable and pathetic and an insult to the real victims of racism.

A case in point is Sol Campbell - A mentally unstable and deranged, selfish, treacherous and arrogant individual who has absolutely no self-respect, dignity or honour.
