Fulham could make a move for out-of-favour Newcastle United winger Gabriel Obertan after Cottagers head coach Rene Meulensteen set his sights on younger flair players for his side.

Jet-heeled Obertan played under Meulensteen when the Dutchman was Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-team coach at Manchester United.

At 24-years-old, he fits the criteria the Fulham coach has drawn up for the January transfer window, as he looks to overhaul an ageing and under-performing squad.

It is understood that a loan move is the London outfit’s preferred option this month, with a view to a permanent deal in the summer if they secure their Premier League status.

However, if the funds are available to seal a permanent move now, it is hard to see Newcastle manager Alan Pardew turning down the opportunity to sell the Frenchman, who rarely figures in his first-team plans.

Obertan’s switch to Fulham hinges on the progress Meulensteen makes with his other targets, including Queens Park Rangers wideman Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Saw this on another thread - the words 'Obertan' and 'flair' being directly linked like that had me crying with laughter!

"Obertan’s switch to Fulham hinges on the progress Meulensteen makes with his other targets, including Queens Park Rangers wideman Shaun Wright-Phillips."

Right Toonies, we need to call an emergency meeting to discuss ways of jeopardising the Wright-Phillips deal. Any suggestions welcome.

Christmas has come very early if this is true. I`m sure Pardew has only hung on to him so long because he was his first signing as our manager. Doesn`t look good if your first signing is a damp squid. Manure must have been laughing all the way to the bank at that deal.

Think it's a Damp Squib, but seeing as Obertan looks so much like Squidward from Spongebob, I'll let you have that one. <ok>

You can't take anything serious from sportsdirectnews.
They're claiming he's only 24 years old for heavens sake.

Nobody would take Obertan, nobody. League 2 is his level and nobody there could afford him. We're stuck with the useless ****

We could always give him away, save on the wages bill.

No we couldn't give him away though, who'd take him? We should try send him to a League 1 side and offer to pay 3/4 of his wages

He still has two and half years on his contract, so a loan will be no good for us at all. It's a long time to wind down a contract on loans.

So really hoping this Fulham rumour is genuine. Even if it's £2m we should snap their hand off for it. If it doesn't go through, then a return to France would be most likely I think. But it would probably be in the cheap in terms of any transfer fees. Or we'd do a swap for some young French lad we've not heard of.

Sports Direct News, nice reliable source then? Oh wait they linked us with Wayne Rooney. Take anything they say with a pinch of salt.
