When we are not just playing the team and having to also play the match officials especially against the bigger sides it not only undermines the credibility and professionalism of officiating but it also severely discredits the premier league as a competition

I think bias in refereeing should be recognised and the rules changed.

Have two refs, one who tries to help the home team to win, one who tries to help the away team, they must stick to their own half of the pitch but can confer with their home/away linesman on decisions. If the refs disagree and get aggressive, then they can be sent off by the ref ref and replaced with a substitute.

This way, clubs can sign their own personal refs and train them within the club. Younger refs can be loaned out for experience.

ps. refs are allowed to set up but not score goals.

Agree 100% however we can't change that and we get the rub of the green from time to time
We don't want to end up looking like Sunderland moaning and blaming others for our down fall

Just need to accept that mistakes by players, managers, linesman and refs are part of the game. It's tough because they don't even themselves out. Some seasons you'll benefit and some seasons you won't.

But talk of conspiracy etc is just daft for me. If that was the case then unfavourable decisions would never go against the top teams.

The ref today made a mistake and he knew it. It's probably why he let Cabaye get away with so many fouls in the second half and I guarantee if we'd had any sort of reasonable penalty shout in the second half he'd have given it.

I bet he was shown footage at half time as although the game changing decision went against us in the first half, in the second half he gave us a good 80% of the 50/50 decisions IMO.

Refs are incompetent but they aren't cheats and they aren't biased. I may be naive in thinking this but if I didn't believe this then what would be the point in watching the game I love every week?

100% true. And even on the incompetency issue, they get the vast majority of decisions right. All we see is the ones they get wrong but most refs get most decisions right.

Not 100% sure on this but I think refs aren't allowed to view any replays at half time for this very reason, to avoid natural bias.

Although the rules say they can't, I'd personally be very surprised if they didn't.

If they weren't shown footage they'd still have know from the reaction of the crowd, the players and Pardew.

Referee's are human, i feel sorry for Tiote. What a celebration, he only scores with his left foot and it's always going to be a blinder!

normally their mate rings them up at half time and tells them what happened
I know that this has happened before

    Couldn't agree with you more.

It's been getting worse and worse over the last few seasons and the major decisions are being blundered and changing the games, no question.

The results are often completely out of whack from what actually occurred on the pitch and it not only cheapens the league and makes it a mockery of a competition.

I'm aggrieved about today obviously, but it's just another to add to the list and I don't really expect any better now.
In fairness it applies to all teams and I'm not biased to just our matches.

Both Sunderland and Man United should have had stone wall penalties that gifted Spurs 6 points recently and I'm sure they'd quote some poor refereeing themselves.
Yeah we benefited from decisions against Stoke no question and we can't complain one way and take the other.

What's galling today is that Man City don't need that kind of help given the utterly obscene amount of cash they've thrown at the league title.
And to hear them doing nowt but harp on about Nasri today is laughable – it's not like they haven't the squad to cover it!

They'll just go out in the window and spend £40 million on another replacement they don't even need. Boring.

Yes, Mbiwa and maybe Cabs should have walked – but by then a clueless referee had lost control, wound up players and probably felt he needed to do Newcastle some favours.
Had he not ruled out a perfectly legal goal then most of the rash challenges would never have happened, no excuse but it's a factor.

I'd also remind Man City supporters about De Jong's assault on Ben Arfa which didn't even get given as foul I recall, let alone a certain red card. Maybe things do 'even themselves out' eh?

    Utter con.

It's not a conspiracy, there are just some absolutely ****e refs and Mike Jones is up there. He's the beachball ref. Unfortunately not knowing the rules of the game doesn't get you sacked or forced to actually read them, you just get demoted to the Championship for a bit.

Jones will be back again soon, the only positive is you probably won't have to suffer him again at St James for a long time and while a Man City point would have been nice it won't define your season.

After the powers that be have scrutinised the events of the day, Mr Jones should be stood down indefinitely.

Agree with all of this. Its about time they thought of a better way of dealing with ref making mistakes than just spending a bit of time in the football league, cos hwne they come back up its just more of the same. No conspiracy against anybody, just repeated mistakes all round.

Refs making repeated mistakes should be stood down for a month. If after a month they continue to make mistakes they should be stood down for 6 months. If after that they keep making mistakes they should be considered as unsuitable for the job and stood down indefinitely.

can I just remind you all that all the Elite (alleged) refs are contracted to ref a number of lower league games.
They are normally done when they have had a bad game and comes across as the ref being punished
when in fact it's just taking them out of the spotlight
this is not a punishment as they will be back after only one game
