So my iPhone 5 won't charge. I have to pi$$ about with the charger for about 10 mins and once it holds in a certain place it will charge, but not before coming up with the error message saying accessory not compatible . It's the charger that came with it for gods sake. So I have checked the charging port and it's clear. Any ideas?

Apple support is awful by the way, can't email and only store in the NE is at the metro centre. And you have to make an appointment. What's all that about. Company that size. 1 store servicing millions and by appointment only

plug it in, leave it for half an hour instead of fiddling with it and take a look, mine says that all the time but it charges - try it then post in half a hour

You need a new charger by the sounds of it mate. I have had zero problems with mine since I got it 6 months ago.

If it's from the Apple Store, take it back and they will fix it. I know it's not the ideal answer mate but probably better than messing about with it. I had a similar issue with my iPhone 4s and ended up buying a new charging port on ebay for a tenner but it cost me another £30 to get someone to do the work, all in it took 2 weeks to get sorted and it still buggered up a few months later.

There's a new store in Newcastle as well, probably not any closer for you like.

If York is better for you there is an Apple reseller, stormfront, on Coney Street. They might be able to help

Sounds like the lightning charger in the base of your iPhone 5 is faulty, this has become a common fault. If still under warranty you can arrange and post it to them if getting there is a ball ache. They will send you out a box with a delivery note.

Try this see if this helps

I've had his many times, with many iPhone's & it's been a big build up of fluff & shi in the charging terminal.

A local phone shop, the ****ty kind that sells gash covers etc, will have such a tool, cost me a quid or summat.

Can always try hard reset by holding in lock & home button together for 30 seconds, but won't be that.

There's a couple of white spots, one inside the charger area and another inside the audio jack. You'll need a good eye for it but check if they've gone red, if they have (either of them) then your phone has water damage. There's also a few inside that apple will check with a microscope pen, basically if any of them are red they'll blame you and charge you for repair/new phone.

There's a stormfront on Silver Street bin Durham as well.

I had a similar issue with the 3rd gen ipad BTW and took it to the metro centre. The internal working of the charge port had corroded (I had dropped a cup of tea on it but I didn't tell Apple that) - they replaced it straight away with a brand spanker!! As much as I don't like the way they do things, their customer service is pretty first class all in all other than the appointment system!
