When I lived in Oz 'root' was their word for shag. Not the noun as in; "We had a root.", but the verb as in; "Can I root you under the stairs?" Interesting eh?
One of the few good things about social media is that its a good way to spread the word across the world about Hull City AFC, people are hearing about us all over the world via Facebook/Twitter and so on. Why do we need to change our name when we are gaining fans like wildfire anyway like this chap from the US? The owner would be better served spamming social media sites like Twitter rather than his bonkers name change plan. Welcome to you KC Tiger, hope you've enjoyed the ride so far!
As far as the US goes it has been the big push this year with the PL coming on TV. They had pick your club shows, advertisements, and intro shows. There was a couple weeks where there were 2 or 3 hours a day of shows just dedicated to learning about the PL and the teams that were going to be playing in it. Unlike 2008 when the only tie in we had was Myhill and Altidore in 2009 now anyone can pick us as their club. The fact that we are doing well this time around is clearly going to help us. If we keep this up for a couple seasons or sign some Americans then you will see a lot of American fans jumping on board.
How much football/ soccer is shown over there? Is it on the main tv networks or on the smaller channels? Must be a big plus that the US national team is doing well, and there's a fair few US lads doing well over here. Same with the Aussies.
Beyond the MLS. 10 years ago I can only remember world qualifiers and the like. Around 2008 ESPN seemed to start showing Man U and Fulham games on TV. Only one a week and Fulham because Dempsey played on their team. ManU because they were the most famous club. You could the games before then but you had to get a Setanta package or later a Fox Sports package. This meant that really no one was exposed to the PL who wasnt already a fan of a club or watched the one game a week that was on. Starting this year every PL game is available either live on one of the 2 channels both are on basic cable or streaming live. I believe that we get more PL games than you can watch. Now anyone can become a fan of a club that is not one of the top clubs. Many people like underdogs so the lower teams will get far more fans than before. Now Americans are not going to get Championship games live on TV. This means to hold the new fans you have to stay up. Most real sports fans pick for life so even if we go down in a few years we should hold on to a higher % of fans than we did last time we went down. You are right that it all started with the US National Team and us hosting the world cup, it has been a bonus that our national team has been playing well in turnaments.
