That was Docherty. He was sacked because we should have won the league after winning those first twelve games and finished fifth. We then were only just above the relegation zone following season and he was given the boot.
For me Stapleton was a slight disappointment. He had been banging these fantastic headers in for Arsenal and I thought he would be doing the same for United. But each time I went to watch him at OT, he just didn't do it. I thought he was much taller than he was but he seemed dwarfed by the huge centrehalves playing at the time. He did OK, much better than the donkeys like Birtles and Davenport.
He hit the bar with a worldy at 0-0. My brother had a bet (laid by my Dad) for him as first goal scorer so was even more gutted. He'd have won 7 quid, which was a lot of money to a kid of 8 in 1994!!
The "worst" match I have ever seen was a 4-0 thrashing United received from Everton at Goodison Park. It probably was a brillant match for the Everton fans but I didn't see it that way at the time. They went on to win the league I think. They had Sharp at the top with Gray (I think) and at the back they had Ratcliffe and Southall. I remember a player who danced round our defence all day and a left foot which kept supplying Sharp to bang them in. Sheedy: regular like clockwork. I think our team had Stapleton, Robson, and the usual regulars but they made no impression and were crushed ... I thought at that match that this was some Everton team. Must have been 1984 or 1985.
Again, listened on the radio. In fact, I remember being in the car on some journey with me Mum!! ****ing hell, I can't remember what happened this morning but I can remember that! A very low ebb for me was losing 4-1 at home to QPR on New Years Day under Fergie. With a hangover. And it was freezing. The only way was up!
I was at Goodison Park and my drive back home was so ****ing miserable. It was a low point and I thought that this United team had been completely outclassed. That Everton team under Kendall must have been their best ever.
Sports night used to do highlights of uefa cup games. Couldnt muhren also play on the left with butch alongside Robbo?? Bit narrow with butch on the left... He had his best days at our place, of course!!
Wilkins for the most part played out wide when Robson and Moses were fit, with Muhren on the other side to whichever side Wilkins was on. Moses was then injured and Wilkins came in to CM. Then he left!
Cheers. Had a feeling Wilkins played more centre/right and muhren on the left. Was muhren left footed?
widnes v australia naughton park wednesday night 1978 widnes beat a touring aussie side that was captained by the mighty mal meninga. not football i know ,but only 12 at the time and lived next to the ground.
That 8-0 was a great day for the centurions. The 3-0 v United then but I was still stupid enough then to follow England so the Rooney injury took the shine of a superb title-winning performance
Utd vs Madrid when Fat Ron scored a hattrick. Remember being behind Bartez when he scored the third. Great atmosphere during the game, slightly odd after the game knowing Utd were so close to going through. Worst game. When Chelsea beat Utd 5 nil. Taibi in nets. I didn't go but I was in a bar in Spain. I think I was only Utd fan in there and I was surrounded by pissed up Chelsea and Leeds fans. Not good.
More recent worst was the 6-1 humiliation by city at OT. Was on holiday in Portugal and really looking forward to it with a few other United fans. So we all planned to meet that Sunday afternoon in the bar . Crowded with city fans too. One Half of the bar was stunned into silence by what happened with the other jubilant. I remember thinking we were still in it in the second half until that f**king prat Evans managed to get himself sent off. Even then United tried to retrieve the situation and attacked. To be fair city deserved to win but 6-1 flattered them.
Halifax away in the Watney Cup was awesome, the gates got kicked in before kick off which boosted the attendance a little! (Bestie scoring 6 at Northampton was ok I guess)
