Get French Football News understands that Premier League side Newcastle United have agreed a pre-contract in principle with young St Étienne centre back Nathan Dekoké.

Our colleagues at France Football reported last week that Newcastle were negotiating to sign the player on a free transfer in June 2014 when Dekoké’s contract expires with St Étienne. Dekoké’s representatives have managed to agree a rough contract in principle for the player to sign in June but the deal is far from complete.

The player has yet to decide whether or not he will at first consider St Étienne’s proposed contract extension or indeed if he will wait for any other interest to appear for his services.

Nothing has been agreed by Dekoké in terms of a contract, merely a provisional contract has been drawn up and the player and his agents are satisfied with those provisional terms.

If Dekoké gives Newcastle the all clear and agrees to join them for next season the Premier League side will still have to agree on the amount of compensation they pay St Étienne for the player, who is barely an adult.

One for the future, me thinks.
Just turned 18 today apparently and yet to make first team appearance for St Etienne, but touted as a 'Wonder Kid;.

Although doubtlessly the club would love us to, it's tough for supporters to get excited about these signings.

I mean weren't Mehdi Abeid and Haris Vuckic dubbed "Wonder Kids" when we picked them up?

It would seem to me that if these youngsters really were as coveted across Europe as we're told, they wouldn't end up at NUFC...

Not as simple as that. The internet offers far more access these days, so whilst these kinds of players have been rolling in and rolling back out again for years, our need to be nurtured by SSN means every tiny detail has to be presented, preferably in HD.

Honestly, I wouldn't even worry about it. Maybe in three years he'll break into the first team and we can form an opinion. Maybe he won't. It's good that we're bringing in players for the future, at least we're doing that. There's nothing whatsoever to comment negatively about.

If one in 4 wonder kids works out it's worth the trouble.

Yeah fair enough, it doesn't worry me – but it's just underwhelming isn't it? I'm sure most feel the same way.

It's great he 'might' be good enough in 3 years but there's more pressing transfer matters in the here and now.

Development signings are perfectly fine if they go alongside genuine first team in-comings that improve what we have.

My point is we're scraping the barrel as far as good news on that front goes, and we bloody well shouldn't!

I don't mind these development signings. January comes around and expectations rise in the face of a barrage of media fairytales on who is going where. I'd be over the moon if we got a striker and nothing else. Even on loan.

Of course I'd like to see us lash money on striker, cover at right back, a wide man/playmaker. I just don't think we'll do that amount of business.
