Club to pay tribute to former manager later this season ⦠THE life and times of our greatest ever manager will be celebrated when Loftus Road plays host to âAlec Stock Dayâ in mid-March. Stock, who â amongst other notable milestones â guided the Râs to our famous League Cup Final win in 1967, passed away in 2001, at the age of 84. He managed the R's on 459 occasions, winning 220 matches. He enjoyed a win ratio of 47.9 per-cent. When the Hoops take on Yeovil Town â another of Stockâs ex-clubs â at Loftus Road on March 15th, his family, former players and fans alike will be able to pay tribute to the legendary boss on a day to remember in W12. Amongst other planned activities, former Râs players who played under Stock will take part in a series of pre-match Q&A and signing sessions, whilst the clubâs matchday programme âHoopsâ will also pay a glowing tribute to the man who touched so many hearts during his time in charge of Rangers. Stockâs daughter Sarah told www.qpr.co.uk: âDad would have loved this. âHe had such a great affiliation with both QPR and Yeovil so this is a fitting fixture for such a day to be held. âThe family are really excited about returning to Loftus Road to join the fans in paying tribute to him and celebrating his life.â Further details will be revealed in due course on www.qpr.co.uk Read more at http://www.qpr.co.uk/news/article/080114-alec-stock-day-1279795.aspx#JZ7MCPpuJpYteqVc.99
Unbelievable, fantastic news Roller !! You should be very proud of your achievements in getting this issue resolved. Hopefully this goes a long way in righting an utter disservice our club did to Alec all those years ago.
Thanks Stainsey, but obviously this is down to the efforts of a lot of people, not least Ian Taylor, Paul Morrissey and others at the club who were just as keen as us to see this resolved. Ian has tweeted asking for suggestions as to which former players should be invited, maybe we could make a list here? I also don't see why it should be restricted to players, club officials and staff should be included. I'll start with the obvious choice, our League Cup winning team.
Agree totally mate. Well done to all involved. And seconded re the League Cup winning team...Would be a fitting tribute.
Fantastic work Roller and everyone else involved in this long overdue effort to finally acknowledge Alec Stock, who was manager when I first started seriously following the R's with my Dad in that wonderful 1966-67 season, that culminated with the Division 3 championship, promotion and that wonderful League Cup victory at Wembley.
Has anyone else got any input on who should be invited? Killy, Peter'54, Stroller (I think) - any thoughts?
Well done to everyone pushing for a day to remember Alec; and for us sharing it with Yeovil too. Nice to see positive PR done for the right reason. Bit overdue though!
Roller, I know that the club couldn't cope if they all attended, but shouldn't all first team players, coaching staff & secretaries etc from Alec's time be invited. Those that are well enough to attend would probably reduce the number able to be there quite drastically. Whatever, I'm pleased that the club are taking this action & I hope that the Stock family have a great day. I know that I will!
This is brilliant. Alec was manager when I became an R, so I will be at the game. The League cup winning team are obvious choices, but can't remember if there were any other players that helped gain promotion the same season.
Brian Bedford- QPR's pre 1967 goal scoring machine, (161 goals in 258 games.).................. Brian Bedford (1959-1965) Dexter Blackstock had a fantastic campaign for Queens Park Rangers in 2006/07, notching 14 goals; and Patrick Agyemang has made an immediate goalscoring impact since his January transfer from Preston North End. But what would be the modern day value of a striker who was guaranteed to score a minimum of 25 goals for the R's every year? One such player from the past was Brian Bedford. In his six full seasons at Loftus Road, Bedford scored a grand total of 180 goals. His lowest tally was 25 in 1963/64. His highest was a staggering 39 in 1961/62, thereby equalling George Goddard's record from 1929/30 for the all-time QPR record of League and Cup goals scored by one player in a season. Read more on Brian Bedford here............. http://qprreport.blogspot.co.uk/2008/02/qprs-pre-1967-goal-machine-brian.html Or John Collins who scored a hat-trick of headers v Hull after being 0-3 down to draw the game 3-3................... John William Bashley Collins (born 10 August 1942 in Chiswick, Middlesex), was an English former footballer who scored 108 goals from 417 appearances in the Football League in the 1960s and early 1970s, playing as an inside left for Queens Park Rangers, Oldham Athletic, Reading, Luton Town and Cambridge United. Collins came through the youth ranks at Queens Park Rangers, turned professional in 1959 and made his debut in a 1–0 win against Barnsley in April 1960. He went on to play 172 league games for Rangers, scoring 46 league goals, then transferred to Oldham Athletic in 1966 and later had spells at Reading, Luton Town and Cambridge United.[1] He became a cult hero at QPR after famously scoring a hatrick of headers in a game versus Hull City. Collins also scored a fourth, although this was discounted by match official Cedric Tomlinson. Ken Wagstaff of Hull later described the performance as: "A hatrick of headers - that's certainly something I'd never be able to do." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Collins_(footballer_born_1942)
That was probably true at the time Bushman, but as BB states at the end of the article......... "I still follow football and the first score I always look for is QPR. I wish the Club well, I really do. They were really good times for me at Loftus Road - the best days of my life actually." QPR At 80 years of age, maybe at this stage of his life, it will give him and the more contemporary QPR fan's a chance to give him a final 'hurrah' as an appreciation of his efforts to our club. I think his ill feeling towards his transfer to Scunthorpe will hopefully have ceased by now.
