http://rokerreport.sbnation.com/2014/1/6/5281408/report-midfielder-on-verge-of-genoa-move There were high hopes for Cabral at the beginning of the season after he signed on a Bosman free transfer from Swiss side Basel. After impressive performances against Tottenham in the Barclays Asia Trophy and against Fulham on the first day of the season. Since then he disappointed against MK Dons in the Capital One Cup and then disappeared from first team contention, barring the occasional appearance as an unused substitute, amid rumours of a bad attitude. Now reports suggest his disappointing spell on Wearside is about to come to an end with a move to Serie A side Genoa. According to the report, Cabral is very close to signing for the Italian side on loan with a view to a permanent deal, with Genoa hoping to beat Watford to his signing. The rumoured deal for Cabral comes hot on the heels of Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri claiming Verona have contacted Sunderland over a possible deal for French central defender Modibo Diakite. It's also been reported that Spanish side Hercules have targeted Valentin Roberge, thanks to their manager, Quique Hernandez, being a fan of the French defender since they worked together at Greek side Aris. With Gus Poyet recently speaking of his frustration with the current squad at his disposal, it would appear the overhaul he has asked for may be imminent.
He looked good pre-season but something went horribly wrong and he didn't do himself any favours in the U21s. Good luck to him.
It will certainly be that way with younger players who don't quite make it. Don't think it was the intention here though.
Sadly we may never really know what has gone wrong here. In the 2 or 3 games I've seen him he looked tailor made for the EPL and was perhaps motm in Hong Kong and v Fulham. That he has just disappeared into the footballing wilderness without even a 3 or 4 game run in a failing team is beyond me completely (given that Gardner, Johnson, Larsson et al have been so ineffective) but if he is not to be given a chance he may as well be sold on and his wages freed up.
Tis a mystery. Interesting that he's been linked with Genoa, make weight in a deal for Gilardino perhaps if theres any truth in that link.
THE future of Sunderland midfielder Cabral is in the balance with head coach Gus Poyet admitting he has a decision to make over what happens to the player next. Poyet chose not to use the former Basel midfielder in Sunderland’s FA Cup third round game against Carlisle United on Sunday, even though the 25-year-old was available to play. That suggests Sunderland did not want to risk injury to the Cape Verde international at a time when they could potentially be negotiating his sale. Cabral has not played a competitive game for Sunderland since August, and reports originating in Italy claim that Serie A side Genoa want to sign him on loan this month with a view to a permanent deal. Poyet is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to transfer moves but he told the Echo: “We are having a few chats with Cabral, and we will see what the future brings. “He was either going to play for 90 minutes against Carlisle or not – I didn’t think it was a good option for him to be on the bench - but we have a decision to make.” Cabral joined Sunderland last summer on a Bosman free transfer from Swiss side Basel, where he played in both the Champions League and the Europa League. The Black Cats’ recruitment team envisaged him as the midfield powerhouse capable of getting goals and allowed squad midfielder Alfred N’Diaye to move to Turkish outfit Eskisehirspor on the basis of that belief. He impressed in the pre-season Barclays Asia Trophy during the summer, and made his Premier League debut against Fulham on the opening day of the season. But despite doing well in that game, in the view of many, that remains his only league appearance for the Black Cats. His only other appearance saw him play in the 4-2 Capital One Cup second round win against MK Dons at the end of August, where he played poorly. He has been an unused sub on several occasions since then but it has been clear that he has not impressed Paolo Di Canio, caretaker boss Kevin Ball or Gus Poyet so far this season.
Gone @FabRomano21 Cabral from Sunderland moves to Genoa. Done deal on loan with option of 1,5M€ to buy him in summer. ‪#‎SAFC‬
