Recent loan signing Marcos Alonso could make his Sunderland debut against Carlisle, having been ineligible for the New Year's Day defeat to Aston Villa. Gus Poyet may opt to rotate his squad with the first leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final against Manchester United to follow two days later, but defender Wes Brown is available after serving a three-game suspension. Carlisle Team News Carlisle are likely to be without captain Paul Thirlwell, who is set to miss the meeting with his former club due to a calf injury. The 34-year-old midfielder, who began his professional career with the Black Cats, pulled up during Carlisle's 2-1 defeat to Crewe on New Year's day. Centre-half Sean O'Hanlon is also a doubt after missing the Crewe game with knee trouble. Poyet “It's the game of the season for Carlisle so far,” Poyet said. “What an opportunity for them. “I want to see my team be professional and do the right things. It's up to the players on the pitch." “It's a fantastic competition – I love it,” he said. “Before I came to England I watched Chelsea win the cup in 1997. “I saw the build-up to the game, the red carpet, and I thought how lucky I would be if I got there one day. “I was that lucky – I played in the last FA Cup final at Wembley and what a day it was.” “I remember one of my first games in the FA Cup with Chelsea, I saw many people taking pictures and I asked 'what is going on today?'' “They told me that they were looking for the one [team] who was going to be in the newspapers the next day because they lost to a lower-league side. “I said 'I'm not going to be there, I don't want to be in that picture. I will make sure we win this game.' “I think that's the mentality we want to have here. We don't want to be the negative surprise of the round.” Kavanagh "I hope we get a big following, it's a great opportunity for people from the area to support Carlisle," he said. "It's a fantastic cup tie. It whets the appetite for everyone involved with the club and can generate some interest." "I still live over that way and I have a lot of friends who are Mackems," "It's a club that's close to my heart and I always look for their results so personally I am excited by the draw." I do not think Sunderland need any more games to go with their battle to stay in the Premier League and their two-legged semi-final with Manchester United in the Capital One Cup, but they are going to get at least one more in the FA Cup. Lawro's prediction: 2-0 Merson The fat, ugly, alcoholic, coke snorting bastard has taken the week off. Stats n Facts The last two times these sides have been drawn together in the FA Cup, Carlisle have forced replays after 1-1 draws at the Stadium of Light only to crash out at Brunton Park. No it's not on TV as far as I know. It has been put back to Sunday because the Mags got drew at home as well, and as per usual it is our game that gets moved..
I thought it was on tv like i initially said blood the youths and Id mostly stick to that but theres some senior figures desperate for a confidence boost. Id start Altidore, Johnson, Cabral and Gardner (shop window) amongst some youth.
I remember about 20 years ago we got them in the 3rd round of the cup, twice in a row, and both games went to a replay. We got Hartlepool in the cup and beat them 1-0. Hartlepool were the best team on the day. What I'm trying to say is we usually struggle against local (ish), lower league teams.
Carlisle get about 2,000 for their home games but have sold 6,000 tickets for this game..No doubt their numbers will have been swelled by the usual Mag suspects hell bent on causing bother..
You think that will happen? Haven't heard anything. Its their cup final really, Hartlepool sold about 10k for their match despite getting around 3k for their home games.
Just going back to the last time we played them in the cup in the early 1990's when there was a load of bother with Newcastle fans who joined up with the Carlisle fans..
Play the kids, if we don't play them in this game we will never find out if some can hack it. It's the last chance for the likes of Gorrin, Egan and Laing before they are inevitably released in the summer. What's the point of spending so much on the academy to never give any of them a chance.
The FA Cup has lost it's magic, I have a feeling the crowd will be 15k, maximum. I really hope it doesn't happen, what you have said. I'm planning on taking my daughter and have already had to leave at half time in one game cos of bits of trouble. (Reserve game at SOL against Newcastle)
You're right about the cup losing its magic. I remember in the 70's when we were drawing a game we should have been winning and I remember thinking "it doesn't matter, it's only a league game". Still like to win it though, after all, I've never seen is win anything in my lifetime of any worth. Someone keeps reminding me.
