Guly do Prado turns 32 today. For no particular reason, I've always really liked Guly. Seems a character too and will remember his L1 and NPC contributions fondly. Your best Guly memories? DTLW
It was spring of the League One promotion year, so April 2011? There were a bunch of teams all packed together. I think teams were just starting to differentiate themselves a bit but things were still up for grabs. Huddersfield had kinda snuck up on everyone and was in the midst of that amazing streak. I think Peterborough was still in it. Bournemouth I think was out. Brighton was in it obviusly. Who else? I don't remember. But pretty sure at least those four teams. So we were playing Bristol Rovers and they parked the bus. Results were not going our way as the other teams for the title all scored almost immediately in their games. Then Barnard got hurt. It was 0-0 into the second half and then Do Prado did... like a Brazilian thing... he got a pass just outside the penalty box that didn't look like much and then he beat two defenders and scored a brilliant goal out of nowhere. It wasn't even like Osvaldo's goal where you were like oooooh something special might happen here... It was just he took a touch, somehow created space and then the ball was in the net before you even knew what was happening. We won 1-0. I think that might even have been the game that clinched at least a playoff for us. It was one of a bunch of great games in a row... I think it was just a game or so after the Forte brace... then right before the one where we were down and Conolly came off the bench and won it... and somewhere in there didn't Guly also score a really good header to win us a game as well? I wish I had DVD'ed that season somehow.
This. That Bristol Rovers goal was the most important of that season I think. I also remember Guly's delightful flick to De Ridder when he scored 'that goal' against Reading. Quality. Anyone who says Guly is a waste of space or a terrible player is talking out their backsides. Tremendous player for us.
Seeing him in Tesco's buying some cigs, then lighting one up outside. When I asked him if he was Guly he said no and walked off back to where Guly lives.
God Bless Guly do Prado and many happy returns of the day to him. He is our most underrated and unfairly treated player.
Happy birthday, Guly. A good guy who didn't deserve the stick that a few (sadly loud) people gave him. Played his part for us.
I was never a fan of gulys I didn't really enjoy watching play for southampton. But he played his part and scored some goals which is what really counts. happy birthday fella
You paint a great picture....I think the headed goal was against Exeter That Bristol Rovers goal was really crucial and we were struggling to break them down. Guly gets so much stick and I feel that stems from the infamous Portsmouth goal at FP. Happy Birthday Guly
At Upton Park in the front row, I felt very close to the action when Guly was fouled by Joey O'Brien and rolled across the ground just in front of me. I remember thinking "that guy's built like a racehorse". Happy birthday Guly.
Cup game v premier league (you're having a laugh) Blackpool. I took my manure supporting mate to see some real football and just as the ball was played into Guly near the edge of their box, my mate said, "That's such a lazy first touch".... Guly promptly turned and smashed the second touch into the top corner. My mate shut up. Thanks Guly and Happy Birthday. I know there is one more goal in there.
Leeds away, Kelvin made about 9 saves and Rickie nearly broke the goal, but he was immense too. There's definitely a Prem goal in there somewhere.

I stared off disliking him then realised that I had no reason to and grew to see him as one of our best players. When he was played as a CF he was utterly sublime at times, and I regretted not giving him time. Away from CF he looked a little less at home. His basic problem is that he looks very lazy. He's not, but he looks it all the same. Some of the goals on that clip were just lovely to watch. Effortless yet unstoppable. Vin
I dont manage to get over to too many matches, but me and my brother made it to our 3-0 triumph over Middlesborough in our promotion season. Easily the best we have ever seen from Guly. He scored two and hit the inside of the post at one stage as well, literally millimeters off completing a hat-trick. It was the same match that Connolly had finished that '20-something pass-build-up-team-goal' thing that was our third of the afternoon. We were nervous before the game. A stat on BBC said Middlesborough had never lost at St Mary's, and my brothers response was 'Come at us'. Guly had a dream performance absolutely tearing the arse out of Middlesborough's back line, and his goals were a sensation too. A celebratory Leffe Blonde ended that day in style.
