This would make a lot of sense given how tight our owner is and also our stated recruitment policy.

Fan favourite will trigger a bumper pay-day for himself when he reaches a certain number of appearances - and the club don't want that to happen

Jonas Gutierrez is heading for the Newcastle exit door – due to a clause in his contract that triggers a new deal once he has made a set number of appearances, writes Alan Oliver in the Sunday People.

The Toon fans’ favourite, who has played 193 matches since joining in 2008, has a contract at St James’ Park until 2015.

However, Sunday People Sport can reveal that if he plays a certain number of matches – undisclosed by the club – then the Argentina star bags a bumper new deal.

Newcastle, though, do not want that to happen – which could explain why the winger has played just 63 minutes this season with his double-century of appearances agonisingly close.

He has scored just 10 times in 177 league appearances for the Magpies and despite his outstanding work rate, boss Alan Pardew will listen to offers when the transfer window opens.

Pardew has also frozen out fellow fans’ favourite Steven Taylor.

Neither player has started a Premier League game since the opening day 4-0 mauling by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Both were back in the dressing room before half-time that day for different reasons – Taylor for his red card and Gutierrez as the sacrifice for the more defensive Vurnon Anita.

And while the first-team squad were travelling last Friday for the game at Crystal Palace, Gutierrez and Taylor suffered the ignominy of playing for the Newcastle Under-21 side.

Gutierrez also knows he will have to play regular Premier League football if he is to have a chance of making Argentina’s squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

Seems like more BS from the Mirror.
Half a story missing the little fact that Jonas has been injured for most of the season.
Alan Oliver might call it the ignominy of playing for the Under-21 side, others will call it continuing his comeback from injury the only place he can play.

Besides, even if he hadn't been injured, who's to say he would have been playing in any case.

Looks like he was due to play tonight.

This is on the NUFC.com page.

    Foxes in Toon tonight.

United reserves round off their 2013 fixture programme on Monday evening by hosting Leicester City's second string in an FA Premier League Cup tie at Whitley Park.

Kickoff is at 7pm and a result must be achieved on the night, via extra time and penalty shootout if required.

Admission is as per U21 Premier League games, with season ticket holders and members admitted free on production of their card. Public admission is available at the turnstiles, priced at £3 adults and £1 concessions.

Squad: Mitchell, Alnwick, Morgan, Dummett, Streete, Good, Gillesphey, Bigirimana, Olley, Gilliead, Kemen, Gutierrez, Aarons, Armstrong, Heardman, Quinn.

Jonas Gutierrez continues his comeback after scoring on his reserve debut last time out against Norwich, but the impending loan departure of Adam Campbell to St. Mirren sees him drop out. Kevin Mbabu is once again injured.

Yep, he played the full game for the U21's again last night. Not the kind of thing you see from somebody who has been 'frozen out'. Just getting in plenty of match practice, having been out for most of the season.

Just working his way back by the looks of things. I do think they will look to move him on at some stage and he'll want to go back to Argentina for the twilight of his career.

They might be looking to keep him match fit with a view to a transfer in January. Jonas will want to buy into that approach too, as he'll want to be in the best position to push for the Argentina squad.
