Never done it, always some nutters around, could have been worse.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire alert on a North Sea ferry sparked an emergency evacuation.

Northumbria Police said they had also arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of affray.

Crew members and passengers had to be winched off the ferry, which was heading to Amsterdam, after they breathed in smoke when the fire broke out on Saturday night, 30 miles from land.

Ferry operator DFDS Seaways said six people had been taken to hospital by helicopter.

Police said earlier that a passenger had been detained by the ship's staff following the incident.

The fire broke out in a cabin at around 10.45pm and was extinguished by 11pm.

RAF helicopters from Leconfield near Hull and Boulmer, Northumberland were scrambled to the vessel along with RNLI lifeboats from Bridlington and Filey.

The 30,000-tonne ship arrived back at Newcastle ferry port, in North Shields, at around 4am and passengers were kept on board until 9am while police investigated.

Me and the missus were on that ship in August. Obviously its nearly all metal, he must have had a big can of petrol if he thought he was going to do any damage. Nutter.

Awful trip. Done it twice and spent the majority of it spent in the cabin being sea sick! It costs about£.50 more to get a flight and your there in an hour. DDefinition of a "no brainer".

Also done the trip twice and the sea was like a mill pond both times out and back. Get some idiots on the trip and there was bits of bother but not enough to put me off doing it again.

My son and his girlfriend have done it twice and suffered as you did.

He's clearly a Darwin award candidate.

I've done that trip a few times with my other half. Coming back after a magic muffin is an experience. I half recall wandering the decks in the middle of the night trying to find food.

Done it a few times, 30 of us for my stag in the june and it was like a duck pond, sailed into a swarm of wasps though

In november it was vile coming back you could smell nothing but vomit everywhere, there were a mixture of lads and lasses and some geordie pricks had a go at us, ended up srapping

Note, no bother when a full squad of lads were on their own

Flown aswell, taxi on the runway in the dam longer than your in the air
